SC gov with family as questions grow over absence
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford was with his family Thursday as legal and ethical questions swirled over his secret trip to see a woman in Argentina with whom he admitted an affair.
The state's top senator questioned whether Sanford broke the law when he disappeared for several days on a trip to South America and didn't transfer power to the lieutenant governor.
"I would think that if the evidence indicates that there is a willful effort to circumvent the constitution, I think there would be a chorus of calls for him to resign," said state Sen. Glenn McConnell, a fellow Republican.
McConnell said Sanford needed to answer questions about whether taxpayer money was used during the affair, but stopped short of calling for an investigation. Sanford's spokesman has said no state resources were used.
His wife said in a statement Wednesday that she had kicked him out two weeks ago and asked him not to speak to her while she came to terms with his infidelity, but spokesman Joel Sawyer said they were together at the family's beach house Thursday. The Sanfords have four sons.

And I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise, but when proven otherwise I think they should have the decency to remove themselves.BlueHen86 wrote:I understand your point. As I said earlier, I'm cynical when it comes to politicians, I think all politicians are crooked, hence my rationale for arguing that values are overrated. I'd like my politicians to have values, I just don't think many of them do so I don't focus on their values but rather their policies.OL FU wrote:86 maybe there is another way of looking at this. You may think that it is not a big deal for elected officials to by unfaithful in their marriage. But the problem is the situation it puts them in to do things they would not otherwise do. Examples,
Ted Kennedy, does any one really believe that he would have acted at chappaquiddick in the fasion he did if the woman in the car would have been his wife.
Mark Sanford, the guy seemingly loses tough with reality and heads off to Argentina to see his girlfriend as if no one is going to notice potentially abandoning his respsonsibilities as governor.
John Kennedy, there were rumors that his girlfriends included mafia plants and soviet spies. I don't have a clue if any of that is true but it is certainly not beyond the realm of possibility.
It is not so much the act of infidelity than the fact that we are still a society look for fidelity in relationships. Since we still are such a society, when an elected politican disregards that and cheats they put themselves in many situations where they lie, hide, sneak and potentially put themselves in a situation to be extorted. It is not so much that what they did is any different than a normal joe, but the decisions they make and the actions they take will be impacted by their infidelity and in potentially harmful ways to the people that put them in office.

Now comes the fun, unfortunately. The republican party bosses in South Carolina hate Sanford. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them got wind of the affair and that is why they made a big deal out of his disappearance, assuming their was a connection.dbackjon wrote:SC gov with family as questions grow over absence

All I know is that this will be an interesting episode for Bill Maher tonight. Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett dying, Samford and his hiking boots in Argentina. The jokes will be rolling in by the bunches.

Sanford's wife: 'His career is not a concern of mine'
Jenny Sanford said Thursday that her husband Mark Sanford's political career is "not a concern of mine" and that she'd be just fine -- regardless of whether their marriage survives.
She would not speculate whether her husband would resign as South Carolina governor.
"His career is not a concern of mine," she told reporters as she departed the family's vacation home in Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. "He's going to have to worry about that. I'm worried about my family and the character of my children."
She added that she would be fine, with or without her husband.
"I have great faith and great friends and great family. We have a good Lord in this world and I know that I'm going to be fine and not only will I survive, I'll thrive," she said.
"I don't know if he'll be with me, but I'm going to do my best to work on my marriage because I believe in marriage. I believe in raising good kids is the most important thing in the world," she said.
