Well that is just ridiculous. If kids want to go get something or bring food from home, then they should be able to.

It takes money and training. I'm aware of the argument/problem - many states just don't have the money to do that. However, if we're going to use public money to feed children, then aren't we obligated to feed them nutritious meals? In South Carolina - even though the school districts paid to have my FiL train their cafeteria staff, there's no desire to make healthier foods. I suspect companies like SYSCO are partially to blame.

Sorry to counter your anecdote, but my MTA commuter bus from Kent Island (with an intermediate stop in Davidsonville) was full. DC streets are at full bustle.
They should be. It’s peak drug season.

I just found out that the CR contains not only language to give fed employees backpay for the weekend shutdown, but also guarantees my pay for any shutdown for the rest of FY18.

So, I’m with all the other small government types around here:

How about making them do PE instead of worrying about ketchup?

Back in my day I was knocking back two chocolate milks and two pieces of pizza most days and burning it up during PE or after school playing actual football or basketball, not using an Xbox or PS4. :grizo1:

I'm honestly surprised we still have PE in public school. It's only a matter of time before the snowflakes have it eliminated because of kids being body shamed. I was probably 5'0" and 80 pounds as a freshman in HS and always seemed to end up on skins. It was good for me. Taught me to stick up for myself. :thumb:

Yes. I've thought about that. When I was in elementary school back in the 1960s we ate candy and pastries all the time. We had vending machines with twinkies and Hostess chocolate cupcakes (yum), those pink hostess cupcake things with the coconut icing and candy bars in school. We had soda pop machines. And we had a Borden ice cream parlor next door to the school where kids could go during recess and after school and buy delicious ice cream cones and sundaes and banana splits and whatever. But if you look at the stats they're concerned about they say there were fewer obesity problems back then.

But I can remember that in our neighborhood we played football in the vacant lot during football season and basketball in our driveway all the time. We played baseball in our backyard using trees for bases. We had our own neighborhood track meets where we made plaster of paris trophies. We rode our little Stingray bikes for miles carrying nets and/or fishing poles and tackle to go fishing or turtle hunting. On school days we had PE and we had two recess periods. A "little" recess lasting about 15 minutes n the morning and a "big" recess around lunchtime lasting for about an hour during which we played chase, played football, or some other thing involving running around for the entire available time.

The food is not the problem.

Yep, its not the food. And its the parents' fault we have generation fat ass coming up through the schools now. The parents are the ones buying their middle school & even elementary school kids smart phones, tablets, etc, enabling the kids sit on their ass all day with noses buried in their devices.

Gen X and prior growing up didn't have all that tech stuff and spent a lot more of out time outside and doing physical activities.

FIFY. As an older millennial, we didn't have all of this stuff in the 1990s. Aside from a GameBoy, we spent time outside. :thumb:

Looks like 93' is about to have a three day weekend. And to be fair, Rand Paul (among others) has a point: Congress is about to increase the budget...again...and this time after a tax decrease.
