I had to look "SPY" up and OK that probably looks like most stock market indices would look. But, in fairness, Obama took over after a big plunge. I can remember writing at the time that Obama was in good shape because we'd just had everything go to hell shortly before he took office.

This is kind of changing the subject to some extent but take a look at the DJIA chart below. Look at how there was a peak in 1965 then things generally declined. The bottom of that downturn is in 1983 or so. That's just amazing. I mean that's a long, big, consistent drop. I was alive back then. I was going to college 1976 - 1981. And I flat don't remember a big deal about the stock market being in a long term decline like that.

BTW, since I wrote that Obama was in good shape because everything had gone to hell shortly before he took office, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Trump is completely full of shit when he says he inherited a mess. He inherited an economy where everything was going in the right direction and had been for some time. It actually could end up being bad for him, though, because things go in cycles. Obama legitimately COULD say he inherited a mess. So he had some wiggle room if things didn't go well right away. Also when things improved he could claim credit even if he had nothing to do with it. People that are paying attention and understand how things were going before Trump took office know that when Trump says he inherited a mess he's full of shit. When things get better people who have been paying attention know that's just a continuation. If the inevitable cyclical downturn happens when he's in office, though, he's going to have nowhere to hide. It may or may not have something to do with him. But he'll own it.

They called the economic recovery under Obama a "jobless recovery" for one thing. I would say that the economy under Obama was OK but wasn't quite "in good shape" and there was definitely room for improvement.
