I don't buy for a single second that, say, 50 years ago a young man that fantasizes about blowing a bunch of classmates away wouldn't be able to find a gun to do it. He might not have had a magazine that holds 20 bullets, but I'm sure he could get a gun and probably would've been a better shot than your average school shooter of today.

Something is different today than back then, and it's not the availability of guns. I don't have much hope we'll really figure out what it is and we'll continue to have the same discussions every time.

Same reason we don't have mass shootings at the White House, Senate Building, etc., etc. All of them have metal detectors and visible, armed security guards. It's not that complicated. And in fact, if I were a parent of school-aged children, I'd be in front of the school board DEMANDING it at this very moment. This IS preventable, without worrying about the fucksticks in Congress having to get off their dead asses, stop focusing on Russia and start focusing on the problems in America....that ain't EVER gonna happen so start applying some goddamned common sense to the situation. Take the bond money and stop building pretty parking lots and start building secure facilities. Fire some useless administrators and hire some fucking trained security people. Get teachers who want to be qualified and let them carry. THEN ADVERTISE THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE ARMED INDIVIDUALS ON THE CAMPUS SO ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK instead of bragging that it's a "gun free (translation: target rich) environment.

It's the 24/7 news cycle that makes the shooters infamous in a matter of moments.

I can remember the name of the shooters from Columbine and the 00s, but I stopped keeping up around Aurora and only know Adam Lanza's name because of Spanos' constant posts. It's always the same profile - angry, socially isolated males with either a mental illness or autism or something related. I don't read about them in depth any more because it's variations on the same theme.

That or it's an Allah Ackbar attack.

"FBI admits it didn’t investigate tip on alleged school shooter last month

The FBI was warned last month that Nikolas Cruz was an armed psycho who might shoot up a school — but it didn’t bother investigating, the agency admitted Friday.

“A person close to” Cruz called the agency’s tipline on Jan. 5 and reported the 19-year-old had a “desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts” and there was “potential of him conducting a school shooting,” the FBI said in a statement.

But the agency said it failed to pass on any of that information to its Miami field office, even thought its own protocols say he “should have been assessed as a potential threat to life.”....."

So they're going to demolish the entire building that houses 900 students, and rebuild it at a cost of 25-30 million.
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/c ... 64969.html
I pretty much agree with most of the comments- tearing it down and rebuilding is a ridiculous waste of FL taxpayer $$. Let's spending 25-30 million because of feelings, instead of a few hundred k for new cosmetic..

meh

Do you realize how many calls about this kind of thing the FBI takes daily?

weeding out the real from the 5000 calls they get from paranoid neighbors and Spandos types?

I dont fault the FBI for this

what if they checked him out? What then? Were they going to lock him away indefinitely for what? jaywalking?

Agree with the FBI comment. What are they going to do? They can't arrest him and they can't come in and keep him from buying the gun.

Not aimed st you but - why do Republicans feel the need to have religion in the schools. The same first amendment right that allows me to say “Good morning” at school also protects my ability to the Our Father. What’s wrong with the 1st Amendment? There’s a bill making its way through SC regarding school prayer. It’s useless, feel good legislation.

Same old same old. Guns are a factor. They are effective tools. But they are not a primary factor. It's as I've written in other posts. You can go to something like the list of gun ownership and gun homicide rates at the Washington Post page at http://www.washingtonpost.com and run the numbers. Looking just at the gun or firearm related rate doesn't capture the issue. You need to look at the total homicide rate because part of the argument is that without guns people would just find another way.

And when you look at total homicide rates the United States does not have the highest total homicide rate among developed countries. And it sure as hell doesn't come anywhere close to having the highest total homicide rate among all countries.

The highest homicide rate among all countries belongs to Honduras. It's 82.1 per 100,000 people. The United States total homicide rate is 4.74 per 100,000. Gun ownership rates? Honduras 6.2 per 100 people vs. United States 88.8 per 100 people. And it's not just comparing extremes like that. As I've written other threads, the correlation coefficient for gun ownership rate vs. total homicides is actually negative. Not "significant" either way. But it's a negative coefficient. Also even if you look at just "developed" countries the coefficient is not "significant." It's positive. But not "significant." There's not like this big obvious thing where one can say that higher gun ownership rate means more homicides.

The focus on guns is misdirected. Things might be different without guns. The ways in which people who wanted to kill would kill would change. But guns are clearly not the primary factor.

BTW, this is a good time to remind people of this:
The deadliest school massacre in U.S. history didn't involve guns.

On May 18, 1927, a bomb destroyed the Bath Consolidated School in Bath, Michigan. Forty-four people, including 38 students, were killed. The bomb was planted by a local school board member.
https://www.floridatoday.com/story/news ... 338847002/

Same kind of thing is true, to my knowledge, of the two greatest mass murders in general in US history. The biggest was the 9-11 thing with the box cutters and the airplanes. The second biggest was the Oklahoma City fertilizer bomb.

If someone wants to kill a lot of people chances are they are going to figure out a way to kill a lot of people. They may have to adopt a strategy by which they kill them over an extended time period rather than in a few minutes. They may have to use a bomb instead of a gun. But the problem really is associated with people. Guns, again, are just tools.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
