This is what happens when you don't micromanage the military

Post by CID1990 »

When you're in Syria and you get attacked by Russian mercenaries posing as pro-Syrian militias, you don't get out the hotline to ask the national security advisor for permission to engage... (that's a quip, FYI to YKH)

Instead, you make a military decision on the ground and you massacre those motherfvckers

https://nypost.com/2018/02/13/russians- ... ns-orders/

Bloomberg had a better article a couple days ago but I liked the snark in this one.

One of the big changes coming out of DoD is that they are getting to make shoot don't shoot decisions on the ground. That is a very positive development and it will save US lives.

I don't think we should be there at all, but if our kids ARE there I want their frontline commanders doing what they got sent to school for.

BTW I'm guessing the unofficial sources are correct - there are around 200 body bags heading back to Mother Russia

I liked it better when you (and Trump) were telling us Russia was our ally...

Right on time!

Except I still say it - Russia would have been the perfect ally - we blew it in the 1990s

But I also freely acknowledge that Russians are OG as hell... and the ship on our friendship sailed around 1992

And Russian body bags warm this old Cold Warrior's heart

I read some articles last week about this. Ass kicking is an understatement. Both indicated that the Russians were coming up short with their artillery/mortar fire. The Americans contacted them and said knock it off or we are going to kick your ass and the Russians didn't listen. We then proceeded to utterly destroy them.

Cossacks as mercenaries! Brilliant. They’re not worth a shyt unless riding horses and brandishing scimitars.

I was aware of that small detail and I *do* have a slight pang of sadness they were Cossacks

Probably the only reason to read the Post is for the sarcasm (i'm sure Hamilton is proud.)

But - I like the change...reverting to the policy of localized shoot don't shoot decisions. I fear what the next test will be. But i'm glad we and the IDF kicked ass.

Russia says it didn't happen:

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, said initial information was that five Russian citizens in the area of the battle may have been killed, but they were not Russian troops. She said reports of tens or hundreds of Russian casualties were disinformation inspired by Russia’s opponents.

I heard something about this from Peter King while he was being interviewed and wondered what was up but I think you probably should've picked a better source to cite. I think most would refer to the New York Post as a "tabloid." The site I use to check sources, mediabiasfactcheck, says the bottom line is "Not a very credible source overall." Of course I know people will attack mediabiasfactcheck. But I am satisfied with its methodology and my own experience with it.

Doesn't matter anyway. I didn't consider the New York Post to be a credible source long before I found mediabiasfactcheck.

File this one in the "WELL DUH" folder

The Putin buddy who owns the mercenaries was in frequent contact with the Syrians and the Kremlin leading up to the the attack, and he told the Syrians he'd do something that would make Assad happy between 6-9 February.

They were looking for a bunch of dead Americans they could blame on IS or Kurds or Turks or whatever. A victory by these Russian mercenaries would have been a victory for both Russia and Syria because what they want is for us to get out. I can't say I disagree with them on that score.

What is worrisome is that Putin isn't going to take this lying down. They are going to test us again, but they are going to have to figure a new approach. He's embarrassed. Look for possible aircraft "mistaken ID" attacks.

Widen your scope and it's the next logical step.

I sound like a conspiracy theorist (and I apologize) but what would you do before any invasion? You soften the ground. You attack utilities, transportation and if possible the government. Russia has been using the Ukraine as a proving grounds for cyber warfare and they've gotten pretty damn good at turning off all the utilities and creating panic in Kiev with a keystroke. Then what? You start confusing your enemy (2016 election. They meddled, 100% and even if Trump doesn't realize it - he was played.) Propaganda and discontent.

What's next? Military action. :coffee: Putin isn't dumb. He's former KGB and is looking to not only restore Mother Russia's glory but come out as the world's super power. I hope I'm wrong. China isn't going to fuck with their debtor too much. There's too much money to lose. The next war will be Russia. :twocents:

I don't think the Reuters article boosts the body count but otherwise I agree. Yes you can find something on this incident from all major outlets. And, yes, the basic point that the Russian mercenaries attacked and got their asses kicked is consistently reported.

Newsweek isn't exactly credible these days but if this isn't them getting trolled by a source it's pure gold.

Actually I think Newsweek is pretty credible. More credible than Fox News on the right or CNN or MSNBC on the left.

They were all shelling the holy f--- out of it, and our guys didn't have anything besides the assault rifles ... nothing at all...
