U of Montana Study: Leftists are Authoritarians Too

Post by kalm »

And those living in Missoula would know!

I find this topic interesting and I mostly blame it on the chicks. I've mentioned before, Bill Maher's long ago (like early 2000's) rants about the feminization of America. I think it's real, perhaps even necessary and positive in some instances, but also leads to some ugly unintended consequences...

Lefties, seeking the same comfort as right wing Christians but from government rather than the church?
New research provides evidence that left-wing authoritarian attitudes exist in the United States. The preliminary findings, published in the scientific journal Political Psychology, suggest liberals could be just as likely to be authoritarians as conservatives.

“Political ideology in general is one of the most important and predictive variables in human psychology,” said study author Lucian Gideon Conway, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Montana.

"I became interested in left-wing authoritarianism in particular because some people have said it isn’t a very real or likely phenomenon — and yet I know people I would describe as left-wing authoritarians. So I was curious to figure that out.”

Conway and his colleagues developed a measure of left-wing authoritarianism, which was adapted from the right-wing authoritarianism scale developed by psychologist Bob Altemeyer.

JFC. How much time and money was spent on researching the obvious?

And what is the benefit?

Do you think right-wing Christians are seeking comfort from the government, for example same sex marriage or abortion laws, and trying to get them blocked or over-turned by the government. Where liberal Christians think these matters should remain in the church or with individuals.

True leftist have to be more authoritarian... by design

Human beings don’t just go along with collectivism unless they are coerced

Nobody ever had to twist somebody’s arm to make them accept liberty

What part of nature, other than humans, have free will???

Good question, Hoagie.

So with humans, making a collectivist decision is always coerced or can humans choose to selflessly support their offspring, family, the group?

I can't roll my eyes hard enough at the posts on this thread (CID) I'm looking at you...

Extremism in any political form becomes totalitarianism (The end)

The intelligent Liberal wants 85% of the exact same things the intelligent Conservative wants
it's the fringe nuts that fuck everything up for everybody (always)

Oh we're "but conservatives-ing"?

I agree with you

I was following the thread title -

But yeah you have to be coerced into either far end of the spectrum

Edit:

I'll add though, that nobody is trying to use the government to force anyone to move off into the nutjob right end of the spectrum .....unless I missed something

But we sure are forcing people to bake cakes

There's state authoritarianism and mob authoritarianism. The latter in my mind is more dangerous than the religious right or the anti-gun left or anything in progressive platforms. Mobs have more tools in their toolbox to ruin careers and lives than governments do and don't really have to obey the first amendment.

Even if liberals are more leery of state authoritarianism, they take the prize on mob authoritarianism without any doubt.

Chills should be running down people's spines when even liberal academics are sounding the alarm on political climates that created Mizzou and Evergreen and card-carrying liberal feminists are issuing warnings about #metoo. But too many liberal people encourage it or just shrug their shoulders over it.

Your question is phrased in the same way as the question “Hoagie, have you stopped beating your wife?”...

Humans can freely make collectivist decision without coercion... but they are not always selfless...

Germans made collectivist decisions in the 1930s freely...wrongly, we might agree...but without coercion...
Collectivist cultures, such as those of China, Korea, and Japan, emphasize family and work group goals above individual needs or desires. Collectivism and individualism deeply pervade cultures. People simply take their culture's stance for granted.
http://psychology.wikia.com/wiki/Collec ... t_cultures

These collectivist cultures are very closed cultures...not coercive...but very resistant to outside influences...

I prefer the more open, free will oriented culture I live in today...I really don’t like authoritarian (left or right) groups...

Yea, I was career military...but that was a free-will decision, to give up some rights for the common good...now, I’m more a “let me live my life my way” kinda guy...I’m still willing to protect the innocent, but I’m looking to avoid authoritian government, especially of the leftist bent...

I don't find that surprising at all. That Citadel guy is right on this one. You can't really believe in leftist government without accepting a pretty high level of authoritarianism.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
