In fairness to our Villanova brethren, that was JMU's side of the stadium. What the cameras don't show is the (nearly) full 'Nova side, plus three ecstatic Dukes. :D :D :D

A whole side of the stadium for the opposing teams fans? I know JMU has a lot of "general seating" areas, but I can't recall a time when an entire side of the stadium, let alone more than 20 yards of field were given up for visiting team seating. That's more than 40+ yards of blank real estate in the video.

I honestly don't know. My friend had tried to get tickets from JMU but was told they were sold out so we had to buy them from Villanova. The south side (away) was all Dukes, from the 30 to 30 with no one on the ends. As the game went on and it just got colder and colder people were more huddled together leaving the completely empty space the video shows. It could be Villanova fans had those seats but didn't come. It was their homecoming and after hearing about how pathetic their home attendance was I was fairly impressed for the day considering the weather and Phillies game.

One thing to consider is some of these FCS stadiums around the US don't even hold over 10,000. Some might get filled, just the stadiums aren't very big.

For example some of the smallest in the Big Sky: Northern Colorado holds 8,000, Idaho State 12,000, EWU 12,000

CAA: New Hampshire, Northeastern and Rhode Island all hold between 6,000-9,000

...according to the Stadiums section of this site.

T-Dog wrote:I was talking about in relation to the CAA being low on average attendance compared to the SWAC, SoCon, MEAC, Big Sky and now the MVFC (which was given a big boost by NDSU and SDSU).

Going by this year's numbers, even if ODU has 14,000 per game for six home games, it'll only bring the average up from 8,954 to 9,341 (an increase of 387 people), which would bring it up to 6th in front of the Ivy and Southland.
As has been already pointed out the CAA was 8th out of 15 conferences in attendance. The CAA was less than 100 in avg per game attendance behind the Ivy, a little over 200 behind the Southland, and less than 500 behind the MEAC. But the CAA is like a tale of 2 halves. The problem with the CAA is the absolute piddling attendance figures from the CAA North. Here's how the North teams' avg attendance stacked up out of 118 teams listed:
-UMass: 12,383: 18th
-UNH: 8,000: 50th
-URI: 4,853: 84th
-Maine: 4,693 86th (unbelieveable for a playoff team that also hosted the #1)
-Hofstra: 3,604: 98th
-Northeastern: 2,937: 105th
Adding up the CAA Norths total attendance for 33 games it was 204,283, and avg of only 6,190 a game. If the CAA North was a conference, they would rank 12th behind the Big South.

If you took the CAA's South attendance figures (mainly due to UD and JMU) it was 440,387/divided by the 39 games and it came out to 11,266. If the CAA South was a conference it would rank 3rd behind only the SWAC and the So-Con.

And the attendance disparity between the North and the South is going to grow even wider in 2011', as JMU will have their expansion from 15,500 to about 24,500 complete, and ODU will become a full fledged member. JMU I suspect will jump to around 18-20k in avg attendance given their post 2004 NC history:
-05' 13,525 (14.5k capacity)
-06' 15,133 (14.5k capacity)
-07' 14,511 (14.5k capacity)
-08' : 15,362 (15.5k capacity)
With the excitement from the stadium upgrade JMU will likely pull 15-18k for the non HC and Parents' Weekend Games, around 20k for HC, and could very well sell out the Parents' Weekend game at 24,500.
I suspect in 2011 with UD, JMU, and ODU the CAA South could very well have 2 of the top 5 and 3 of the top 8-10 teams in avg attendance (assuming ODU avg somewhere between 15-18k in 2011')

ODU will have large numbers because we've sold well over 14,000 season tickets. For our first year, it won't matter who we play, because frankly very few of our fans have heard of many FCS teams outside of JMU, UR, Delaware, and the other CAA teams we usually face in basketball. Even App State winning three National Championships will draw blank stares from ODU football fans until we get into FCS football and discover which teams are good and which aren't because FCS football wasn't on our radar until we started playing. We will show up to watch ODU football, not the opponent.

But as for helping out the CAA numbers, we won't in the first two years because we don't officially become CAA until 2011. But we will have solid numbers for an independent and because most of us are heavily invested in ODU football both financially and time wise, we will continue to go to the games regardless of the opponent or score so that in 2011 we should be a boost to CAA attendance figures.
I was talking about in relation to the CAA being low on average attendance compared to the SWAC, SoCon, MEAC, Big Sky and now the MVFC (which was given a big boost by NDSU and SDSU).

The 14,000 per game is only season tickets, not students, band, ODU Administrators and guests, visiting team's fans or general public. That will be 20,00 and more if they add temporary seating as they are exploring. ODU also has a seven home game schedule for the next two years. As MN pointed out this is all moot as they are playing as a Ind. until 2011 the year they have a full CAA schedule.

AVERAGE FBS GAME ATTENDANCE: 50,000
AVERAGE FCS GAME ATTENDANCE: 10,000
AVERAGE DII GAME ATTENDANCE: 3,000

the ave fcs game attendance should be around 20,000 or 15,000 based on fbs & DII attendance numbers.
any thoughts? :geek:

ODU sold over 14,000 season tickets and will still have to add students, visiting teams fans, walk-ups etc. to get the total numbers per game. Right now it seems certain ODU will be sold out for the seven games this year at almost 20,000 a game (they are also trying to add seats in the corner of the end zone which would make it more than 20,000). Although that will not help the CAA numbers offically, it will of course help when they start playing a conference schedule in 2011.

Due to the interest and the stadium being sold out, ODU's first game is now going to be televised across the state of Virginia and I am told it is likely at least 2 more will be televised. As to attendance dropping when we start playing Richmond, Madison, William & Mary and our other natural rivals you have got to be kidding. ODU is already planning a stadium expansion and anyone here in the area knows attendance will only go up. And, yes the fans here are knowledgeable enough to know we/ODU will take some lumps in the beginning. We still sold 14,000 season tickets and turned down over 1,000 more, by any measure that is a good START.

Yeah, your attendance won't drop... in fact I think there would be more demand for those games. A couple losing seasons to these teams and that could change very easily though.

It will be interesting to see if the economy helps FCS attendance this year.
