Fear

Post by kalm »

At Yale, we conducted an experiment to turn conservatives into liberals. The results say a lot about our political divisions.

This is interesting and actually makes sense, especially if you follow conservatives on social media. Bunch of lizard brained snowflakes.

I can think of one issue that will turn that model on its head: Climate change.

I would say there's probably more of a correlation between fear and support of government gaining powers, whether it's immigration restrictions or restrictions on what type of car or light bulb you can buy.

And it should be pointed out that fearlessness isn't always a virtue.

I saw this report on the Young Turks recently...

I want to take responsibility for myself and my family...not because I fear something, but I understand the shortfalls within the system...

So, I carry a weapon, I prepare for an emergency, I carry an extensive first aid kit, I take classes and keep up on the latest information on how to do all the above...

I lead a very fearless life, but one in which I am prepared...I’m not waiting for a government agency to respond to my needs...those agencies are there and will eventually respond, but I’m not waiting around helpless...

I don’t fear any type of people in particular...but I’m not going to live my life differently because certain people don’t like the way I live my life...

My beliefs are not grown out of fear...

Liberals, IMHO, are more fearful than any conservatives I know...

You basically described the experiment in your answer Col...

Carrying a gun changes how you feel about your environment - you feel prepared - thus "safer"
Carrying a first aid kit also creates a safer feeling

So... Yes, Thank you

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washin ... divisions/
I'd have to see the methods details to comment directly on what they did. But It's interesting to me because I have always thought of the "stamp out all risk" movement as coming mostly from the "liberal" side. The "liberal" side, to me, has been the one more vested in trying to guarantee well being for each individual.

I do think social science is an area where liberal bias is rampant and I also think it's easy for them to get the results they want.

Basically, if you fear X you are more likely to want the government to do something about X. How profound. Too bad there's no Nobel Prize in the social sciences.

Change the subject to guns or climate change and suddenly liberals are the fearful ones.

This right here

It all comes down (yet again) to whether you want to be able to do for yourself

or submit to having others do for you

which is why this "study" is intelligence-insulting to the Nth degree

Meh...
You gotta know by now that pretty much all clustered college intellectual groups
believe there's a Liberal hiding inside of every Conservative - if you just dig deep enough

The belief is that if you're a conservative you were a liberal that somehow "got broken" along the way
Which is intellectually (extremely dishonest) because it uses presumed "expertise" as a starting point
and not Philosophy or Historical Human behavioral studies

All you have to do is read Enlightenment thinkers John Locke or Edmund Burke
to know that Conservatives are born too...
if that's not far back enough try Cicero and Cato
from the Roman Empire were great Conservatives

Actually, I think we are *all* nurtured to a degree

I dabbled in the ideas of state socialism as a wizened old teenager... and then I picked up books.. and then I set off on a path of lifelong education in the form of witnessing the worst humanity has to offer - for many years and in many places of the world. What they might refer to as "broken" I refer to as "aware".

Likewise to the idea that cloistered academics are convinced that conservatives are just repressed liberals with personal flaws... it is also conventional wisdom on the right that liberals just haven't experienced enough of true human nature.. which is why many people become more conservative as they grow older. My own mother is anathema to that... she gets more whacko liberal the older she gets.

Ultimately we are all shaped by experience... I grew up in the country, running through the woods barefoot, swimming in my ponds and shooting guns before I had two digits in my age. I can fully understand how someone who grew up in Chicago might view the world and people differently than I do

The only time I itch for a Locke v. Burke debate is when Ivytalk is getting uppity.

But if what I’ve read about Locke is correct, he thought we are born with an empty slate. I’m not sure if that fits the liberal narrative and/or the increased size of the fight or flight/emotional part of the conservative brain.

I’m sure there are fancy pants Latin words that better describe what I just wrote but the Harvard of the Palouse didn’t offer Latin....
