I think EACH idea above is worth doing...new laws are not needed to do any of them, and no law abiding citizen is impacted negatively...GannonFan wrote:I think the argument that some have is that "something" has to be done and any politician not doing "something" is failing.∞∞∞ wrote: Then I think it's for the communities or states to decide. I'm not sure what the argument is for the federal government to interfere, either for arming or disarming schools.
That said, I'm fairly conservative when it comes to gun-rights, but I do think it benefits the nation for better background checks that take into account mental health issues, and restrictions in place for those who have these issues. I think that's one thing liberals, moderates, and conservatives can agree on.
And on a related note, I also think we need to VASTLY invest into the nation's mental health infrastructure.
Doesn't matter what level of government you're talking about. I think there's some validity to this as I think every level of government could be doing something - locally better secure schools (metal detectors, armed SRO's or local police), at the state level help support the local levels and help to close any reporting loopholes that allow people like the Parkland kid to remain free despite all the warning signs, and at the federal level coming up with a standard age of purchase and ensuring that the background system is far more reliable than it is today in terms of reporting into it.
Not tons of controversy in any of that, but partisans must be partisans and hence they're sure the other side is evil and not worthy of talking to.
But that does not make Gun-grabbers happy...you have to ban something...

Well one thing is certain
The anti-gun crowd went from "lets ban some guns" to "if you're against banning guns you are a murderer" just about as quickly as they pull out the Nazi card in an argument about ... pretty much anything...
I'd say that guarantees a couple things
No guns will be banned
AR-15s (and similar) sales are going to go through the roof
* Ain't it funny that the same people who say you can't deport 11 million people think they can disarm ten times that many?

And willful ignorance of the context of the debate is honest?GannonFan wrote:While I'm sure you have quite the wide circle of friends, legitimately I do, the ratio of people who are not on this website and do not know you in person is far smaller than the people who fall outside of that delineation. To deny there are such voices is simply delusional, hence my "let's be honest" encouragement. If we're going to debate about this, let's at least approach it honestly.kalm wrote:
Thank you. I still haven’t heard anyone on here or in person who’s against armed guards but I suppose there are a few.
Reminder: This started with an 89 troll post to Dback and then you chimed in changing what Dback said. Again to clarify, I (honestly) hadn’t heard that 1) people were arguing against “tighter security” and 2) assumed that by “armed personnel” you were referring
to security personnel other than teachers.
I (honestly) hope this helps you out...

I'm sure a law against anyone under 18 owning a handgun in Maryland would have prevented this shooting.

Well, the current law that prevents anyone under 21 from owning a handgun didn’t stop it...and it’s illegal for anyone under 21 to get a concealed permit didn’t stop it...Gil Dobie wrote:I'm sure a law against anyone under 18 owning a handgun in Maryland would have prevented this shooting.

I'm not much of a gun guy but isn't it accurate to say that in close quarters the handgun (or anything short barreled) is going to be your weapon of choice. In a school, the handgun has the advantage of quicker target acquisition over a rifle or anything with a longer barrel (this also depends on the distance between gun and target. I get if you're shooting down a hallway, then it's a moot point.)93henfan wrote:Exactly what I was going to say: An AR and a handgun in a school are almost a wash. Mechanically the action on a handgun is shorter so it can cycle faster, throw 5 or 6 - 33 round mags in your back pocket and a handgun is superior weapon in closed quarters if you know what you are doing.
The AR is really designed for 50-300 yards. That’s where it shines.
Turns out I might be a little gay. 89Hen 11/7/17
Re: Breaking: Maryland HS School Shooting
Yes. Closer quarters, shorter barrel. That's why the Army went from M16 to M4. They anticipated more MOUT. M4 is a compromise for knocking down doors but also being able to shoot down the street.Ibanez wrote:I'm not much of a gun guy but isn't it accurate to say that in close quarters the handgun (or anything short barreled) is going to be your weapon of choice.
