I am working remotely this week in a place where I can have the TV on while I'm working early int he morning so I decided to try watching CNN from 5 - 6 am CDT, Fox News from 6 - 7am, then MSNBC from 7 - 8 am.

It's amazing. I started the day before yesterday. CNN very quickly focused on the story about Trump campaign aid Rick Gates, who had frequent phone calls in September and October 2016 with a person the F.B.I. believes had active links to Russian spy services.

I heard absolutely NO reference to that story during my hour of watching Fox News. Instead, I heard a lot about the Justice Department Inspector General starting an investigation into the FISA warrants thing. BTW I heard nothing at all about THAT during my hour of watching CNN.

Today I did it again. This time CNN did make a reference to Jeff Sessions declining to appoint a special counsel. And one talking head referred to the Republican push to investigate the FBI as "tinfoil hat" stuff. And of course there was more stuff on Rick Gates.

Then when I watched my hour of Fox News, again, there was not a peep about the Rick Gates story. And they had a news babe on there saying that her sources tell her there are going to be criminal referrals in the IG report and that after THAT Sessions will probably appoint a special counsel.

BTW MSNBC's morning Joe didn't talk about EITHER that I recall. They talked about other stuff.

We have a serious problem with cable news options.

1. No shit
2. Understand that much of those particular news items are from unidentified "sources", meaning that the reporter is likely the only one with the story. Fox won't report on information from someone else's unidentified source, and vice-versa, without confirming it on their own. And if it can't be confirmed by the "opposition" news, there's a chance it's not the whole truth.

The thing about Trump Campaign worker Rick Gates having contacts with the Russian is in a document filed by Mueller in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/28/us/p ... gence.html). It's part of the official public record. Fox news not mentioning it cannot be explained by the sort of thing you're talking about.

Also the fact that the Justice Department IG is opening an investigation of the FISA process is public record. CNN not reporting on THAT can't be explained by the sort of thing you're talking about either.

As soon as people figure out that TV news is a business AND journalism simultaneously

and that journalism will always take a back seat when business is concerned

all of what we see on the TV will make complete sense

Not ALWAYS. Like for instance I remember NFL Scout Chris Landry on the radio one time talking about a defensive tackle at BYU. The guy was going to be a high first round draft choice. But he let everybody know he wasn't going to play NFL football because it'd mean he'd have to play on Sundays. People didn't believe him. If I remember correctly somebody drafted him anyway. Not in the first round given he said he wasn't going to play. But they took a shot at drafting him in the middle rounds hoping they could convince him to play.

But they didn't convince him to play. I think Landry said he went on to become a school teacher.

One of my brothers has a daughter with an IQ in the 160s. She could do just about anything she wants. She could be a Doctor. She could be a Lawyer. She could be an Engineer. But what she wants is to work in a local recreation department. And she's perfectly happy doing that. She enjoys it.

Money's not everything to me either. I mean, it's a lot. It's a consideration. But for instance I decided a long time ago that I will NEVER take a job such that I'd have to supervise other people. Also I've passed on making more money based on where I'd have to live.

I too am thrilled at the occasional outlier
and every time in my life I ever made a decision based more on money than anything else
Every time - I regretted it...

But none of that is really more than anecdotal and charming
The reality is stark and plain to see

We build M1 Abrams tanks that the Military routinely declines - and we build them anyway
Now the Marines have 9,000 tanks of which they claim they need 400 to 500
And we'll be building more next year (Just watch)

An anecdote works if the statement is something like "not always." To unequivocally support a statement like "not always" all you need to do is point to at least one exception.

But, really, I don't know what the numbers are but it's pretty clear to me that there are pretty many people who do not make getting as much money as they can the top priority. I think that the overwhelming majority of the people DO want to make enough money to live comfortably. But people make decisions all the time where they balance other factors against how much money they can make and choose not to pursue the path likely to lead to the most money.
