If it's for plinking, you're doing it right. Why it hell would you waste defense loads on paper or steel?
So what are your thoughts on practicing with what you would shoot in real life? How important is that?

I'm with all of you guys in that I look for the cheapest I can find, but have read a few times where you should shoot every now and then what you carry so you get used to it?

For me, that would be Blazer Brass 9mm vs the hollow points...I haven't purchased yet.

How about a shotgun? Practice shell vs home defense.

This is how I roll...I have my self-defense loads that I paid $$$ for...Every day carry...

I bought 400 rounds, ran 100 through the weapon to convince me it works...

Then I buy elcheapo for training and plinking...

I did buy 150 "military load", whatever that counts for, 00 shells for around .25 each. Gonna run some of those through my shotgun in a couple weeks when I go to Montana. Looks as if they are regularly around 1.10.

I get where CID is coming from, as a LEO. You’d obviously want to train with what you will be trusting your life with.

For the rest of us, Col’s advice above is same as mine. Run through some of your defense load for familiarization, sure. But when you go to the range as much as I do (just got back from four hours there this morning), it’s a financial necessity to keep your skills sharp on cheaper ammo.

If you go to the range only two or three times a year or if you’re shooting more frequently on your department’s dime, by all means, use hollow points on paper and steel.

Today, I shot:
120 rds 5.56x45
120 rds 7.62x39
150 rds 9mm
20 rds 6.5 creedmoor

If I shot match ammo or defense loads at that rate, I’d probably have to only go two or three times a year instead of two or three times a month.

I met up at the range with another former devil dog today. So much fun. Both of us were sighting in brand new ARs. We were both hitting the 12 inch plate consistently at the 300 yard berm on iron sights halfway through our first magazines. After I was happy with the BZO on the irons, I threw the ACOG on, zeroed it, and was then pinging whatever steel I wanted, shooting randomly at 100, 200, and 300.

Meanwhile, we were watching people with optics missing at 100. It’s hard to fathom why people would waste money shooting when they fail to master basic marksmanship fundamentals. Read a book, take a class, join the military. Whatever. Just learn how to shoot. Or give me your ammo. Shit.

I plan on shooting a shit ton in Montana. I bought more than enough ammo for the rate I shoot. Need to get the inventory down. Went for the volume discount.

I don’t count rounds anymore. I just have stacked ammo cans labeled with the month and year I bought them. If I ever have to run for any reason, I’ll load the diesel wagon until the fenders rub the tires.
