Nobody thought trump was going to win
Including about 25% of the people who voted for him

There's some evidence that trump himself ran as a kind of lark and didn't think he had a chance either

This will all be forgotten and re-written
in 50 years everybody knew he was going to win

Hey I fully own my complete fail in saying it was going to be Hillary in a landslide... and I always will. I don't think my sage reputation (the one in my head) will be harmed

It's too bad he didn't run for the election that was going to happen back then when JBB started this thread. IF Trump would've gotten through the Republican Primaries he'd have gotten his ass completely kicked by Obama and that probably would've been the last time he tried it. We'd be much better off right now. We'd probably have a Republican President who is actually qualified for the job and is not mentally ill.

Otherwise, I don't think Trump is a clear thinker. I don't think he's much of a planner either. I think that JBB's post to start the thread gave him WAY too much credit on a number of counts.

Trump is just a flipping con man. That's it. I guess you can give him credit in that regard on the understanding human nature front. He knows how to play suckers. But stuff like him being this great planner and strategic thinker, etc. Nope.

I thought he had a chance in the fall of 2015 as he was tearing through Bush, Cruz, Rubio, etc. He was every bit if not more obnoxiios then as now and it wasn’t hurting him. When you have a duopoly anything can happen.

I’d have to go back and check to be sure but I think I called it for Trump on this board in late July of 2016.

Well, she certainly helped. OK, it was a combination of the two. But what other Donk would have carried WI, MI, OH, and PA against the message Trump was campaigning on?

The biggest reason to be happy with a Trump presidency (and there may just be one reason or a very small handful of reasons) is that him being President meant that we avoided the disaster that would've been a Ted Cruz presidency. If he's the "Republican President" that JSO was rooting for then we all need to thank Trump for dismissing Cruz in the primaries so that we didn't end up with that outcome. Cruz is evil incarnate.

A Ted Cruz presidency would've been disastrous. The booger eater freaks me out.

Someone who unlike Hillary was actually willing to campaign in those states. Populism has appeal across the spectrum.

Trump won because of the economy.

No it's not. As I've written before Obama would have clobbered Trump if he'd been able to run again in 2016. If you want me to go through the highly credible poll on that issue I will. Let me know.

Trump got a lower percentage of the popular vote than Romney did. What got him in is that people didn't want to vote for Clinton.
