Re: My new spirit animal
Most of the delay of starting the Western Front was due not to FDR, who wanted it, but due to the British. We had a plan they vetoed in '42 (and rightfully so, since it probably wouldn't have worked) and then, to make sure they felt like equal partners, we went ahead with the second front in '43 being opened against Italy as per Churchill and his group's desire (and Italy was a pretty bloody fight for us so if we were trying to avoid casualties that was an odd way to go about it). The British were dubious even about the Normandy landings in '44 but we had clearly moved into the senior role in that alliance by then and it was our call. We cut back supplies to Russia in '42, temporarily and then increased them to levels greater than in '41 and kept it up throughout the war, because that was when we entered the war and needed the stuff ourselves to fight Japan as well as get a force going in Europe as soon as possible. If it was solely up to FDR we would've had a potential failed landing in Europe in '42. You have nothing to back up your claim that FDR was gaming the system to have Russia suffer more in the war - stop making up history.houndawg wrote:Er... we promised to open a second front against Germany in '42. FDR had no intention of opening a second front with Germany in '42 to make things easier for Stalin.

This. We had began to mobilize and increase our strength from an anemic ~240K in the Regular Army with another ~225k in the NG in 1940 to about 1.6M in Dec. 1941. That's just the Army. I forget the approx. #s for the US Navy and USMC. OF COURSE, FDR had no intention of opening a second front in Europe in 1942 - I was impossible. That had nothing to do with wanting to bleed the Russians. It had to do with the fact that the manpower and war material needed for that front didn't exist.CID1990 wrote:We weren’t anywhere near ready to open a second front in 1942, Spandoshoundawg wrote:FDR had no intention of opening a second front with Germany in '42 to make things easier for Stalin.

OK
Here's a hot take for you-
We didnt promise that there would be a second front in 1942... outside of wild predictions that we would overrun North Africa. We promised IN 1942 that we would open a second front
Just think - in 75 years your great grandchildren are going to be talking about how Trump was playing 3D chess with the koreans and the Russians
BTW... exactly what airbases were we going to support Stalingrad from? Asking for a friend.

Russia has the nuclear arsenal. It's the only country such that, if we got into a nuclear exchange with it, there would be no winner. China doesn't have that kind of nuclear arsenal yet. Nobody except Russia does. That's what makes Russia special. Russia is a legitimate threat to us to an extent that nobody else is.

There are 5 other countries in the world who can end us. China is one of them. All it would take to remove us from the board would be 20-30 well placed nukes to take down the grid and take out key military assets. Then our domestic differences would do the rest.
