Inside the White House Bible Study group
By Owen Amos
BBC News, Washington DC
8 April 2018
For the first time in at least 100 years, the US Cabinet has a bible study group. What do they learn? What does Donald Trump make of it? And why aren't women allowed to teach?
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43534724
It's a fascinating read and the BBC gives it fair treatment. Drollinger is all over the map and inconsistent as fuck. He has ministries in 43 state capitols, but...
Drollinger believes the Bible teaches the separation of church and state.

"We have to differentiate," he says. "And unfortunately, a lot of our evangelical religious right advocates have not made this differentiation."

In January, when a New York Times opinion piece described Drollinger and others as "Christian nationalists", he wrote a 1400-word letter to complain. What was his objection?

"It has the idea of tyranny when you take it to its extreme," he says.

"It means that I'm meeting with the Cabinet members clandestinely in order to overthrow the government - in the form that we presently have - for a theocracy. I mean, at the end of the day, that's the accusation, and I have to be strong on that."

But is a bible study for Cabinet members, with political themes, not a merging of church and state?

"I believe in institutional separation, but not influential separation," he says

"No matter what the institution is - the family, commerce, education - it needs the bulwark precepts of the word of God in order to function correctly…

"But the minute I start to amalgamate the church and the state institutionally, then I'm into theocracy."
Oh yeah...he also likes Trump.

These are your leaders........

This is why sucking up to the Christian Right is a great idea if you want to get elected
But probably not a great idea for the Republic

True Believers are the most dangerous people on earth
God Bless their little hearts - they're so excited to usher in "The End Times"

Well, you can call them "true believers" or "whackos" or what have you, but at the same time they're also called "voters". That's what makes the Republic so great - people get to vote for what they want.

And at the end of the day, even though I didn't vote for him, Trump's whackos are still far less dangerous than Ted Cruz's whackos. :thumb:

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

Are you out of touch or what. I am an evangelical and neither I nor anyone I personally know, or know of in ministry is excited to hit the red button. Don’t let your prejudges clog your brain with nonsense. That is a JSO move you made.

The article asks the question, but then fails to answer it. Not every Christian group takes the stance that women can't teach. There is evidence that the one or two places in Paul's letters that mention that referred to a specific situation in which individual women were stirring up trouble. The article fails to indicate what this particular leader's stance on that is.

(FWIW, my fellowship ordains women and allows them to be senior pastors. Currently, my cousin is our senior associate pastor, and she's doing an amazing job....)

Actually that was the one part of the tweet that I thought was off

If you are an evangelical, then I guess playing with porn stars and also being pro life is hypocritical because we're talking about the commandments

But you can in fact be nonreligious or atheist and still be pro life

Conflating opposition to abortion with religion is the same as conflating religion with race - its disingenuous

Trump is not or has claimed to be an Evangelical. He is no choirboy and everyone knows that. But he said he would have our backs and he has. Also, his affairs had taken place prior to being in office. Now where is the real JSO?

I find it interesting that Evangelicals would put so much trust into a man that doesn't share their values or morals.

The word unprincipled comes to mind. And yes both sides are, and yes the fact we only have two sides supports this. Lesser of two evils, but Hillary...blah, blah, blah.

There's the third option - vote for someone else. Or the 4th option - don't vote.

If someone would treat their wife poorly - someone that supposedly love - then how would you expect that person to treat a stranger?

Quotes from the left haven't encouraged them to jump ship either.

"They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." - Obama

Good example of lefties brushing it aside without looking deeper into the subject.

Just used Obama as a high profile example. There are many many more quotes from the left, bashing evangelicals. Are you going to support a group that bashing you constantly? That's a large voting group, and the left appears to want no part of it.

I'm pleased with this thread...

We're this close (I'm making a pinching gesture with my fingers)
To American Evangelicals admitting that morality is basically irrelevant

Which opens up whole new possibilities of honest conversations that can finally be had
by actual adults that don't have to pretend anymore

and we can settle on Logic and Reason as the corner stone of this Republic
and move past the charade...

Charade: SHəˈrād
an absurd pretense intended to create a pleasant or respectable appearance...

I'm still not seeing how wanting to hit the red button equates to Jesus being dangerous. Is it a "Christian" vs Catholic thing I'm not understanding. If so just say yes, and I'll stop wondering. I don't have much exposure that most on this board seem to have with the a-hole religious right. Most of the a-hole religous types I know are catholic lefties.

There is nothing dangerous about Jesus...
He was a charming individual with a heart of gold
Probably the most important historical figure of all time

The danger is with "True Believers"
Those who lack the honesty to admit they don't really know - because nobody knows

Instead they insist on speaking for God
They will be the death of us all

The closer they get to the Oval Office
That should make sane people very nervous
