I have Evangelical friends. I completely oppose them politically and think their religion is a joke, but I share beers with them. That's the beauty of America.
Well that's good to hear.

Please tell me the joke.

You don't think Christianity has an overwhelming influence on Russian politics, or in the Philippines, in Eastern European politics, or many African nations?

They should be called out for the faux-Christianity. Every. Single. Time.

It's a political movement pretending to be religion.

I read it as referring to a blurred line in the US. Reread and I don't think that was what you were saying. My bad.

Not really. My religion and my political beliefs are not mixed. I'm not a proponent of using the bible to make law.

I don't even take Evangelicals as if they're serious Christians anymore. They're one of the most likely religious groups to get divorced/remarried, have premarital sex and children born out of wedlock, be against policies helping the poor, and have little knowledge of the Bible. The religious beliefs of most Evangelicals are arguably not even Christian anymore; it’s the Cliffs Notes version of the New Testament.

This one GOP rep is the symptom of a larger problem.

Have you morphed into a Christian theologian now? Your transformation is complete. Except for the “clubbing” part.

On the other hand, this is nothing new. Dobson and Focus on the Family have been around for a long time. They were staunch Republicans and latently homosexual creepers back in the day and apparently nothing has changed.

Good! The liberals around these parts have become too centrist lately. And I'm getting more liberal as I grow older, so you'll be enjoying these "translations" for a while to come.

Have fun with millennials taking over politics over the next decade or so. Hard left is coming up.

Yeah it has worked so well all the other times its been tried

I'm actually kind of hoping for it - I'll watch from afar in my retirement haven in Vietnam (its gonna happen) where I'll have more liberties

These kids are going to repeat so many failures of close recent history that in 50 years they'll amend the Constitution to make citizenship contingent on civics and history classes

I'm honestly not sure. There are many nations where Christianity has a large dominant role in society and politics though. They might not be theocracies in a technical sense, but the separation of state and church is severely blurred...which is what the founding fathers painstakingly avoided.
The Holy See (Vatican City) is the only one.

Influence is one thing ( and yes, there's a lot of Christian influence in our gov't.) but that's not close to a theocracy. At least, IMO.

Even more annoying is blaming me for trolling when I joined the discussion long after Trip was frustrating you guys. Or did you confuse me with Cleets in starting the thread?

Still annoying.

In the arc of human history, the only opinions that truly shape societies are the ones which passion runs high. If that labels me an extremist, then so be it. America's far-right is a great modern day example of how to influence people; unfortunately centrist voices, while important, are washed up in the background.

And no, Trump didn't bring doom and gloom; he's just another cog in the far-right machine that's been chipping away, little-by-little, at the foundations that make America a great nation.

America can be significantly better that it is now, both socially and economically.

I genuinely tried being a centrist. I tried understanding the right's POV. I tried to give and take.

And what did I get? Getting called a libtard, labeled as evil and morally corrupt, labeled as hating America. So fuck it. Liberals have been trying to compromise for way too long.

It's time to fight fire with fire. :fuel:
