PETA Wants Slaughter Beach DE to Change Its Name

Post by 93henfan »

Speechless. Honestly, just speechless. The town is not named after the slaughter of animals or people.
Slaughter Beach Vice Mayor Ken Lewis said he and other officials in town are a little bewildered by the request.
“This is mind-blowing,” he said. “We’re a small, quiet little town and now PETA is sending things out in press releases and trying to force the town to do something without even discussing it with anybody."

Never mind that it was named for a person who's last name was Slaughter. I have a woman in my office with the same last name. Should PETA ask her to change her name?

Get her to write to PETA asking if they’ll pay her her and all of her family members to legally change their names to Sanctuary.

And in other news that affects me and you: they just opened the fourth lane across the Severn eastbound on 50! Woot. No backup in NapTown this whole week. - - Also, the paving is now complete on both sides (old and new) of the expanded 404 between Wye Mills and Denton. I give Maryland credit. They may tax the fuck out of you, but my God do they ever build roads in that state.

And then you get to the DE state line and you’re back to two lane rural on 404.

:thumb: Are the lanes just not skinny as fuck on the bridge now though? I can see some accidents happening with dumb summer drivers.

All hail our Republican Governor Larry Hogan. 8-)

With the permanent lines down, it’s wider than it was this time last week, but still snug.

To get everyone to speed, this is a small bridge over the Severn River a couple miles before the big bridge. It's been a chronic choke point for traffic headed to the beach. It was three lanes in each direction with a thin jersey wall divider and barely any shoulders. They added a lane without adding any space. 12' lanes became 11' and now there are zero shoulders. I'm skeptical even with 93's experience this week. Just wait until the Virginia drivers start coming. :ohno:

You’re just finding things to complain about. I take this EVERY day (except Friday), not a couple of times a month in the summer like I assume you do.

Before this, your average evening rush time spent at the Severn backup was probably 15 minutes to go three miles, and you’d get probably an accident a week on average that would make the backup anywhere from a half hour to two hours. It has taken me up to five hours to get home on occasion (87 miles from New Carrollton when not bussing) whenever there’s a fatality or flipped semi.

So now I’ll save 15 minutes EVERY day and 30 minutes once a week and two hours once or twice a year when there’s a head-on fatality (there were three incidents last year).

I’ll take my chances.

I am petitioning Larry Hogan to rename the Severn crossing the Slaughter Bridge.

:suspicious: I'm not complaining, I'm just skeptical. This is like when VA put in the hot lanes so ease traffic on the beltway across Am Legion.... It's worse today than ever.

I know you take it more, but have you taken the new setup on a Friday in the summer?

No. I haven’t worked a Friday in Annapolis or points west since ever. Won’t do it. Won’t take a job that required it. I have accidentally worked the Thurs before Memorial or Labor Day before, so I more than know what a regular Friday is like. I always take ad hoc TW on those days now.

They can’t. There are no shoulders. They need a new span like the other Bay Bridge in CA. 89 will be glad to pay for it.

You are wise. It's the only thing I hate about having a house in DE. Sometimes I wish it were in Deale or somewhere on my side of the bridge. The only good news about going down is that feeling that I'm getting away from this place. 8-)
