bluehenbillk wrote:Three thoughts:

1 - I don't believe the story. Why? Because all you'd hear on this board is "school shootings would never happen in a state where everyone has guns, like Texas".

2- Schools DO have blood on their hands. I find it amazing how many times, especially in today's environment, that kids that are potential threats are allowed to attend school - schools need the equivalent of a no-fly list.

3- The gun culture in this country is silly & sad and is somewhat complicit in these shootings. Basically the message is "Don't F with my guns & what happens will happen". We can only hope that 100% of the casualties today were from NRA member families...

Move on, no thoughts or prayers.
1) Don't be a retard. "everyone has guns", just not in the fucking school. So, yes, it can just as easily happen in Texas as anywhere else.
2) Agreed. SOMEONE had to know something about this kid. Parent? Friend? Teammate? This kid came to school with:
An attacker was armed with an AR-15-style rifle, a pistol, a shotgun and pipe bombs, the official said.
and NOONE knew he was prone to this? He acquired this stuff and a PARENT doesn't have a clue? No teammate or friend saw that arsenal and asked WTF?
3) "Gun culture" has nothing to do with it. Nor does the NRA. They didn't go in there and shoot up a school. ZERO school shootings have been done by NRA members...they're not the boogeyman you make them out to be.

Yea, but by doing ZERO after the first 100 school shootings, you ARE doing exactly that. :coffee: :coffee:

Maybe I'm having a brain fart, but I actually can't understand your statement.

I've always advocated tougher gun laws and an increase in mental health funding. When more school children have died this year than active-combat soldiers, we clearly have an issue. And we've had it for a while.

Everyone can rest easy...

This bastard did not use an AR-15 or a semi-auto pistol...according to Texas Gov. Greg Abbot
He added the gunman used two weapons in the attack, a shotgun and .38 revolver. Both of the firearms were legally owned by the gunman's father. Abbott said he did not know if the father knew that the suspect had possession of the firearms.

Gun control nuts on this board and others have said they are not coming for shotguns or revolvers...just semi-auto guns...so i’m Just going to sit over here and see if they are honest...or show their true colors...

So in this case, the kid takes his Dad's shotgun and non-auto revolver and does the same kind of damage that shooters with AR-15's do. Yes, I agree, the focus shouldn't just be on the AR-15, because people miss the bigger point - every gun is deadly. We waste a lot of time talking about the type of gun used but the large majority of people don't know enough about guns to discuss them in that detail and like I said, banning a particular gun just means a different gun will be

I've posted before with what I'd do, but I certainly would get behind two other things:
1) Schools should be just as safe as sporting events - every school, at least from middle school up (if not all) should have metal detectors and we should go with clear backpacks. And every school should have an armed resource officer, again, at least at the middle school level and up. We seem to be able to make it work for sporting events, why should schools not get the same treatment?
2) I'd push for increased penalties on people who have their guns used in crimes. Take this Dad for instance - not sure how his kid got his hands on the guns, but he did and now 10 people are dead. If you want to be a gunowner I have no issue with that - it's protected in the Constitution and that's not going away. But if you can't secure your guns sufficiently enough and your own kid can write journals about shooting people and can take them from the house and actually shoot people, then you as the gun owner need to be prosecuted. I'd even go as far to say an accessory to murder in this case. You chose to have these weapons, you should be held responsible if you can't keep them out of the hands of other people who will use them to kill people.

I think people are saying that - clearly many people want no guns. I don't think it's a mystery or a hidden thing. And caps on the number of guns a person can have. I think those folks are getting louder and louder. I don't think they'll be successful, though, as the 2nd amendment is a huge impediment to that, but they're certainly talking about it.

Clearly we need to ban semi auto handguns, so called 'assault weapons, and magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, as this school shooting demonstrates....People should only be allowed to have revolvers, shotguns, and non 'assault rifles'...

Metal detectors and clear backpacks are just small bumps in the road. The shooter always has the first shot. And that would be used on the person manning the metal detector. Then it's a mad dash down the hallway to get that asshole teacher.
And if someone wanted to commit murder, they wouldn't be too concerned with "burglary" to acquire the guns. I'm just saying that it can't be automatic that the parents (or "owner") of the gun(s) be responsible. I'll admit that I don't know how "secure" a gun safe can be, but I'm guessing that most are no more secure than a bicycle lock.

They didn't have a right to guns granted to them by the government. Or any rights to speak of.

Anything they had was their landowner's.

There was also no specific proscription against them either

in fact, Russia was a largely open carry, "gun nut" society prior to 1917 (when the Bolsheviks restricted gun ownership.... why could that be?)

I know you can see Russia from your wife's backyard, but you might want to walk away from this one

BTW - natural rights are not "granted" by the government, Junior
