They went the route of three defensemen (not sure if anyone took the other option). They protected Carlson, Orlov and Niskanen but in reality Schmidt was the #2 D man IMO. The fact that he was going to be a free agent I'm sure had a lot to do with it. Orlov and Nisky are both under contract for 4-5 years.
Believe me, there were plenty of current teams whose GM probably had nightmares over this for months.
But this feels like the Cubs and Red Sox winning the World Series and breaking long droughts.

That's kinda how I felt about the Eagles winning the SB. Could this be my year? IF the Caps were to win the Cup, I'm putting my retirement funds on the Nats.

Little cross-check compared to Wilson's hit on Marchessault. The Wilson hit was a little more blatant, should have been a 5 minute major, IMO. Refs gave him 2 minutes. Wilson should, but won't get suspended.

Debatable on the 5 minute and suspension. But he did get 2 and it had zero impact on that play. So while the hit was harder, it had FAR less impact on the game. It's also worth noting the refs did NOT call the penalty on Wilson until after the scrum.
FWIW, it's EXTREMELY rare to get a 5 minute interference call (there is no 5 minute roughing call). You'd be hard pressed to find a single one called this year (regular season too).
