Shelter, running water, available food...

Post by Chizzang »

Global percentages
60% of Humans on planet Earth do not have running water or clean water to drink and use for Sanitation
http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense ... ilets.html

Now here's the whopper
Just add Shelter and Food to the "Clean running water" equation and the number jumps to 75%

Be thankful and experience daily gratitude my brothers...

Perhaps you can convince them the values of a monopoly while you're helping out

I am old enough and grew up rural enough to remember walking into the woods at night to use the outhouse. If it was bad weather, we had a pot to piss in, and carried it out when the weather broke. Also pumped water from a well. Later a cistern made of cement, as my mom told my dad, get running water in the house, or she's going to town to stay with her parents. Had a modern bathroom soon after. Very happy with modern convenience of water and sanitation.

Those kinds of experiences are probably why you're a less judgmental and kinder person than I am...

World population currently about 7.64 billion, so 4.2 billion would be about 55%.

Your 1st link says 60%. Your 2nd link says
– Some 3 in 10 people worldwide, or 2.1 billion, lack access to safe, readily available water at home.
This link says its 1 in 9 people worldwide without access to clean drinking water..They give a # of 783 million people, which would be closer to 1/10th of the world's population.
https://thewaterproject.org/water-scarcity/water_stats

This one says 1 in 10 without access to clean drinking water
https://www.theguardian.com/global-deve ... fographics

This says
"Worldwide, 780 million people do not have access to an improved water source
An estimated 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation (more than 35% of the world’s population)"
https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/global ... stics.html

Are others links you can find stating the same/similar. If you include access to clean drinking water AND sanitation it appears the percent could be closer to 1/3, but nowhere near 60%.

And where are you getting"Just add Shelter and Food to the "Clean running water" equation and the number jumps to 75%"? I don't see that in either of the links you gave.

I am a Libertarian that believes in minimizing government to the extent possible. But note that, when you look at the way things are in the United States with respect to availability of things like clean running water, reasonably safe food, etc., that's largely because of the system of government in the United States.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Nice. But we all need to realize that when we drink tap water feeling it's safe, eat food feeling it's safe, take a drug feeling that it's safe and effective...that confidence is due to the system of government we have. It's not perfect and it's not zero risk. But when it comes to that kind of stuff there is no place in the world that is as good at it as the United States is.

Just ask German mothers of the 1950s about Thalidomide.

There are many benefits we reap from government. Refreshingly honest John, considering your political leanings.

Just another example of how state school grads > those from the hallowed halls.

I think we've lost sight of the forest for the trees. The underlying message regardless of the exact numbers is that we've got it pretty good here.

Plus it's a funny article

"A new study in Environmental Science & Technology estimates six out of 10 people on planet Earth don’t have access to flush toilets or adequate water-related sanitation. In other words, 4.2 billion human beings desperately need a technology you use every day and couldn’t give less of a shit about.

Think about it. In your bathroom, you basically have a bucket full of water that can empty and refill itself. You only use it for one purpose—waste disposal—and yet it likely smells better than your garbage can or kitchen sink.

And that water? It’s magic. You can sit there and pour cup after cup of water (or, you know, whatever) and the water level will remain almost exactly the same. But if you dump a few gallons in at once, the siphon initiates and the whole mess disappears completely. You don’t even need electricity or gas to operate the underappreciated flush toilet."

Awesome stuff, Gil! :thumb:

My mom was born in Alberta in 1933 and spent the first 6 years of her life across the border on a homestead in Saskatchewan. They had no running water or electricity. She remembers her mom sewing grain sacks into underwear and swimsuits for her and her siblings. One winter, her oldest brother who was 13 at the time killed a moose which enabled the family to make it through the winter. The nearest town was 10 miles away and a two day trip by horse and wagon (they didn't own a car). Me getting tangerines in my Christmas stockings was a tradition carried on from those days, as any fruit was a wonderful delicacy.

For us, it's truly amazing how much the world has changed a ton in that one lifetime (and not always for the better).

For much of the world it still hasn't.

Americans in particular will find something to complain about even though our overall standard of living is likely above every other developed nation in the world. Even here if you think you have it bad you don't have to look very far to find someone in a worse situation. Clean water delivered to your home, sewers removing waste, relatively clean air, etc. are all taken for granted. Today Americans get pissed when there's no available wi-fi or they have to wait two days for Amazon Prime to deliver some product likely classified as a want vs. a need. :ohno:
