Trump's military parade to cost $80M more than initial estimate: report

Post by dbackjon »

http://thehill.com/homenews/administrat ... l-estimate

President Trump's planned military parade in Washington, D.C., is reportedly estimated to cost $92 million, $80 million more than was initially thought.

CNBC reported Thursday that the Department of Defense's updated cost estimates includes $50 million from the Pentagon and $42 million from interagency partners, including the Department of Homeland Security.

The development comes about a month after CNN, citing three U.S defense officials, reported that the parade would cost close to $12 million.

The soaring costs will fuel opposition to the parade from Democrats and some Republicans, who fear the display, planned for Nov. 10, may look "totalitarian" as it winds its way through the streets of D.C.

The "very expensive" war games with SK that Trump cancelled cost 14 million dollars. The Meals on Wheels program he thought was a waste was 7.5 million dollars. And no need to put that money towards helping the 40,000 homeless veterans out there...

After Trump, Republicans can never say they care about fiscal responsibility ever again.

Government for ya. Estimates are it costs about $1M for the Mummers Parade in Philly, about $10M for the Rose Parade on New Years Day, so this costing 10 to 100 times more certainly makes sense.

This is not "government for ya." This is purely Trump's bullshit.

Overruns happen, but this is something that literally benefits no one and can actually be cancelled.

Hey, I don't want the parade either, but I'm still wondering how all of these other parades cost a fraction of what this is supposed to cost. Heck, you even said the war games they had planned with SK would only cost $14M so why does live fire activities cost a fraction of this? Surely a parade could be held for less, as frankly all parades in existence (even the annual French one Trump is basing this on) do cost less.

Do they fly military jets and ship military equipment from all over the country to those parades?

The French do. And they fly a stealth bomber or two over the Rose Bowl Parade and the game. So yes. And still far cheaper. :coffee:

associating sports with military is the oldest trick in the book...
drumming up nationalism and patriotism
using Pride to hide a useless expenditure

Frankly it's the moronic equivalent of paying tax dollars for a national beauty contests
But with a beauty contest we're allowed to criticize the contestants and the contest
Q: Name something that offends Republicans?

This parade idea is ridiculous and wasteful

but you've used typically bad examples

No military exercise with SK costs just 14 million dollars when you factor in the costs of us already having our people and toys over there to begin with

cart all that sh1t across the Pacific and that ShootEx costs 200 million

Agreed that this parade is a ridiculous idea...and shouldn’t happen...

But in typical fashion, the cost that is being put out there includes funds that will be spent no matter what...

Things like salaries...the cost of each soldier, sailor, airman and marine scheduled to take part is added up...but those costs will be paid if those folks sit at home, or march down Constitution Avenue...

Yes, the flying hours and shipping costs are over and above normal and, frankly, are a waste...

But on another previous remark, if this parade makes us look like a communist country, then France, and Britain, just to name a few, must be communist because they regularly hold military parades...

You know what else is wasteful?

Flyovers at football/baseball games, parades, Air Force One photo ops over NYC, etc

I'm glad to see everybody so in step about wasteful spending, but there are very few credible cheerleaders at this pep rally

While some of the things you say are true...if you knew how a football game flyover was organized, you’d understand that there is usually very little waste there...

For example, The Citadel wants an F-16 flyover from the wing at Shaw...once approved through channels, a training mission is laid on the schedule with very legitimate tasks...it’s going the be flown no matter what...

The mission ends with the flyover...one of the training tasks is hitting a target at an exact time...know as TOT or Time on Target...

The only extra costs are the couple of pilots sent to the stadium to act as safeties...to watch the airspace and communicate with the lead pilot...

But, everybody loves them except for the people who think it’s just a waste of money...

I'm very familiar with them - and I also know that they do get written off because they incorporate training -

but I also know from my friends and family who flew lots of them that those flights were not going to just happen anyway... especially not on Saturday and Sunday

But my real point is that opposition to spending is usually just a function of opposition to who is in charge-

The Department of Defense and White House have been planning a parade to honor America's military veterans and commemorate the centennial of World War I. We originally targeted November 10, 2018 for this event but have now agreed to explore opportunities in 2019," Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning said in a statement.
