Breaking: Mass Shooting At Madden Tournament in Jacksonville, FL

Post by BDKJMU »

"Police are responding to a “mass shooting” Sunday at a popular area in downtown Jacksonville, Fla., filled with bars and restaurants.

“Mass shooting at the Jacksonville Landing. Stay far away from the area. The area is not safe at this time. STAY AWAY,” the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office tweeted.

Police did not provide further information, but said they "can’t stress enough to stay away. Many blocks away."

The shooting took place in the Jacksonville Landing area, which is located along the St. Johns River and is described as an area with "a wide variety of waterfront dining options and a cozy inside shopping mall."

Several people on social media participating in the Madden NFL Championship Series reported hearing gunshots shortly after 1:30 p.m. during the livestream of the tournament on the platform Twitch. A video surfaced on social media showed players disconnecting from the game as gunshots were heard in the background."

Do you suppose the shooter's parents told him he had to move out of the basement? Or did he have to play as the Cleveland Browns?

Too soon?

So...when is Dback going to start blaming gun owners or the NRA?

I think you knew that but if you didn't, eSport revenues will likely top $1 billion/yr either this year or next. Viewership is already at 150 million people (globally) and expected to rise by another 100 million in less than 5 years. It's also the first truly global competitive league.

While Twitch (owned by Amazon) is still the primary platform, ESPN and TBS have been playing eSports for a year or two now. And Disney just signed the largest deal in eSport history for two leagues to air on ESPN and ABC, including prime-time slots for the playoffs and finals.

I have a friend who partially paid for college through professional gaming. He was sponsored and ended up qualifying for the World Championships (didn't win). Still...paid travel to South Korea, a small salary, free gear, and thousands of fans...not bad for a college kid. And he was part of it when eSports still hadn't exploded (no Twitch at that time). You can certainly make a great living doing it now.

Some colleges have begun to offer scholarships, there's youth leagues, and parents even hire personal trainers to teach their kids how to master games. There's a legitimate future in the profession.

ps. I've been to the World Championship semis for League of Legends, although I don't play or follow it. It was an exciting experience at a sold-out MSG on par with big sporting events I've been to.

$500,000/month?

I have an employee that does that as well and is making a little extra cash. It's amazing how much money is floating around in gaming. I've heard that it's far surpassed the movie industry.

In 20 years gaming will be considered a “sport” and the players will be called “athletes”

^To be fair, it's called electronic-sports, such as NASCAR is a motor-sport. The adjectives clearly define what they are (although motor-sports are physically and mentally demanding).

Golf and bowling, well...

Weird and nerdy aren't the same.

Yeah - pro video gamers is a legit "career". People earn $1000s playing video games online with an audience.

Tim MacRae, a suburban Charlotte dad, kisses his baby girl goodnight. Then he cracks open a Red Bull, sinks into his office chair and begins his workday: Six hours, most nights, of car chases and drug deals.

And as this Friday dusk turns to night, thousands of people across the country begin to go online, to watch him.

More than a quarter-million people follow MacRae, 34, as “Timmac,” on a platform called Twitch. Tonight, he plays a special souped-up version of the video game Grand Theft Auto, and as he plays, it’s as if they’re looking over his shoulder: They watch as he sells pot. They listen as he banters with cops. They make it possible for him to spend half his waking life playing video games – and make an enviable living doing it.
Turns out I might be a little gay. 89Hen 11/7/17

I've watched the world Street Fighting championships, plus I was watching Overwatch the other day (haven't seen League of Legends yet, although I have played that game - it's an extension of the multiplayer game they had on Warcraft: Frozen Throne, which was an awesome game). With that said, I personally don't get a lot of thrill watching these things - there's not a lot of replay value watching this. I know my kids love watching Fortnite videos of other people playing, so obviously there's a market for it (heck, South Korea has been watching national StarCraft tournaments for years now), and it's clearly going to keep getting bigger. Most NBA franchises now have e-sports NBA 2K teams.
