That was clearly McCain's biggest plus - he wasn't beholden to any one party or ideology, he was his own man. With that said, I still wish he had been more. He wasn't terribly intelligent, he didn't necessarily use his bi-partisan role to reduce partisanship in the Senate (granted, maybe nobody could), he was a Senate lifer and I generally frown on those types anyway, and his attempt at campaign finance reform may have made a bad situation even worse. His service to his country should always be honored, but he was, truth be told, a somewhat mediocre Senator.
