Stock market was way down today. Hurts me personally for the time being. But hopefully we'll have a little bit of an economic disturbance to increase the odds of the Democrats taking at least one House of Congress. Disturbances happen. I'd be good for one to happen now. It'd be better for the country in the long run if it contributes to reigning in the corruption that is the Republican Party right now.

Meanwhile we really need to start pushing for automatic runoff voting to provide at least SOME chance that other parties and/or independents can gain some traction. We need for people to feel free to vote for other options without worrying about their votes being wasted.
I thought the economy did not influence voters or was I just reading your past missives wrong?

Well there. You’ve come right out with two things you’ve been denying for months:

1) blatantly wishing failure upon the country
2) it’s the economy, stupid

Amen on that last part. Mainers voted YES on ranked choice voting yet for some reason we don't get to use it for our governors election (even though they used it during the primary voting  ). Of course Republicans are in charge in this state right now including the vengeful and nasty Paul LePage (R). And there are 2 "Independents" running which all but guarantees another win for the Rs. So corrupt......

Maine Voters Overrule Their Leaders
With support from Governor Paul LePage, the legislature nullified a statewide referendum approving ranked-choice voting. On Tuesday, the citizens got the final word and enacted it again.

For the past two years, Maine voters have been at war with their legislature and Governor Paul LePage over the way the state’s elections should be run.

In 2016, Mainers approved the use of ranked-choice voting in a referendum, becoming the first state in the nation to adopt the so-called instant runoff method. The following year, however, the legislature voted to delay the new system for five years, until 2022, citing concerns about whether ranked-choice voting conflicted with the state constitution. The courts declared that the system would be in place for this year’s primaries, allowing voters to test out ranked-choice voting and simultaneously decide whether to keep it.

I apologize, I wasn't implying it wasn't corrupt. I was just saying it's self preservation. Of course the politicians don't want a new way to get elected.

Was the referendum binding? I'm not familiar with laws in Maine regarding that. If not binding and if it's then contingent on the legislature to pass a law to enact the outcome from the referendum, then voters need to step up and only vote in representatives that will pass the law. Lawmakers still have to be voted in - if they aren't doing their job, vote 'em out. And if that doesn't work, run people specifically to win elections with the specific goal to enact the will of the referendum. Politics is slimy, but government can still be effective as long as the voters are determined to make it that way.

In think that we need ranked choice voting in today's world. "Winners" should be getting more than 35%-49.99% of the popular vote. It would help our country function better.

The only thing is, to take the other side on this, is that you're only artificially making a winner get more than 49.99% of the vote. And even then it's just 49.99% of the people who vote in the second election, which could be substantially lower than the number of voters in the first election who may sit out now that their favorite is out of the running. You haven't really solved the issue of people getting voted in by less than half of the voters, you've just gamed the system to make it seem like the problem has gone away. How does it help to function better if you just make up the numbers?

Maybe we just need better candidates who actually have real policy ideas and goals for why they want to be in office, rather than just carrying a red flag or a blue flag and then try to stay there as long as possible?

I support ranked choice voting. I think it'd do a lot of good.

I also support our current system, the Electoral College. It's worked, as design, +90% of the time. Mistakes are not often.

What exactly does ranked voting do that isn't already happening? What is the "functioning better" or the "a lot of good" that would happen? Force-feeding voters two options they may not like (depending on who finishes in the top 2 in the first election) seems a lot like what happens today anyway. I wouldn't have been any happier in 2016 having to cast a vote for either Hillary or Trump after I used my first vote in the first election as a protest and cast it for Jill Stein (the other Her!). Heck, I probably would've sat out the second election as a result rather than voting for either of them, and I'm, when compared to the average voter, highly motivated and highly informed. So again, what is the benefit that comes from this other than the "winner" getting to claim that in one election they received at least 50% of the votes cast when that election is basically manufactured?

Not sure about ranked voting, but I do not want the Electoral College screwed with in any way. This gives smaller states a say instead of 10 large cities.

I was just picking up, as Flaggy did, on your equation of a vote for Stein with the vote of a highly-informed voter. 8-)

The fact that I knew she was a complete whacko, had no chance to be elected, and that she wasn't Donald or Hillary cements me as a highly-informed voter. If we went ahead with the façade of a second, "run-off" election I would've either done a write in vote or just would've left the race blank without a vote.

Screw this artificial "let's rig it to get someone 50% so that everyone feels better" movement. Without looking it up, I'd wager that 20%-40% of US Presidential elections since we really started voting (i.e. direct election by ballot) didn't result in a person winning 50% of the popular vote and we managed to get through the past 200+ years with just one civil war. :thumb:
