CAA Flagship wrote:Trump signs executive order promoting 'opportunity zones' in distressed towns
President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday to create a new White House council for promoting private investment in “opportunity zones” in more than 8,700 distressed communities across the U.S., aiming to expand prosperity to neglected zip codes.

The council, to be chaired by Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, will help streamline applications for communities to qualify for the investments, the president said.

“Our goal is to ensure that America’s great new prosperity is broadly shared by all of our citizens,” Mr. Trump said at the White House. “We are drawing investment into neglected and underserved communities of America so that all Americans, regardless of Zip code, have access to the American Dream.”

White House officials said they hope the program will attract as much as $100 billion to those communities.

For too long, Mr. Trump said, economic development has been concentrated in certain large metropolitan areas.

“With the creation of today’s council, the resources of the whole federal government will be leveraged to rebuild low-income and impoverished neighborhoods that have been ignored by Washington in years past,” the president said.

Not sure what this really means, but it sounds like a move in the right direction.
Not expecting much success from this but any gains would be welcome. I'm sure some local governments will find a way to screw this up.
Just Nixon’s “enterprise zones” under a different name. There’s nothing new under the public policy sun.

We already have HUBZone set-asides. Those contractors are almost always a company consulted by a bunch of rich white guys from the 'burbs and fronted by some black folks who actually live there. Ask me how I know.

Some after-action notes from Wiki:
-The US federal government approved $13+ billion dollars for annual distribution to HUBZone firms. Unfortunately, barely HALF of the money is actually being distributed. Many qualified businesses still encounter barriers to entry and are intimidated by the process.

-The program has not generated enough HUBZone contract dollars to have an impact on a national scale. When spread over an eight-year period across 2,450 metropolitan areas and counties with qualified census tracts, qualified counties, and Indian reservations, $6 billion has a limited impact.

Credit where credit is due, the President and Congress did good with the criminal justice reforms.

And though I'm disappointed it does nothing regarding the oversight of privatized prisons, it's nonetheless a huge step forward for reforming the entire system. But there's still a ways to go.

Have we not learned anything about Trump's Twitter proclamations?

We'll see if this even happens. But, don't think I'm buying it until Mattis says it's happening.

The state of our government:
Republican Sen. Bob Corker said he’s not surprised that Trump says he won’t sign continuing resolution — and he laughed as he described the situation.

Corker said there is no guidance from leadership about how to move forward on this. He said senators are already heading home, and stressed this is all “elementary relative to” Trump’s decision yesterday to withdraw troops from Syria.

Here's Corker's full exchange with reporters:

Corker: “Well Mitch is on the phone with Paul right now so..." *starts chuckling*

Reporter: Why are you laughing?

Corker: “Well, why not?”

Reporter: Are you surprised by this?

Corker: “No, not really. I mean look at Syria yesterday... this is elementary relative to the decision made yesterday in such a precipitous way right, I mean you’re talking about a major policy decision made in the same manner right so this is something that whatever happens we all know we’ll move beyond. What happened yesterday in Syria which is a similar kind of decision making process is going to affect things things for the long haul.”

Reporter: What is the path forward on the CR though?

Corker: “I don’t know. Y’all have fun. I’m getting ready to drive to Chattanooga.”

Reporter: What’s the guidance from leadership?

Corker: “They have no guidance ... I saw senators heading out going home knowing that even if we vote they’re going to give folks time to get back ... I think they’re just sorta swirling around over there”

Then Ted Cruz walked by and said: “I think we need to follow through with funding for the border”

Corker laughed again: “You can’t make this stuff up”

It's Trump determining that. What would be great is if enough Republicans in the House and the Senate said, "enough if enough with this guy" and voted to override his veto. But they won't. They've got no integrity.

And BTW remember that the promise was that Mexico would pay for the wall. To be saying now that he's going to veto an appropriations bill because it does not fund his wall is absurd.

Pulling out of Syria was something the guy promised, so good on him if he does it.., we shouldn't be there

Do a no-fly for our Kurd friends and that's it. Give them the equipment they need to black Turkey's eyes if necessary

all of this is very entertaining though... not the neocons rending their garments- but the antiwar libs clutching their pearls over us leaving .... everybody's hypocrites

Cute, but I was trying to argue that our POTUS is the real Mad Dog, while Mattis is just the outbound SecDef. But you knew that.

Yes, the butt clinches a bit. I was OK with Trump because I knew that there were proverbial adults in the room.

As the adults leave, you start to worry about what the kids left will break.

I try to envision a way to get him to resign, but there doesn't appear to be any quit in the dude.
