Tesla Model 3's are $46K with rear wheel drive and 3.5 sec 0-60 mph
The BMW 335d is 7.0 sec highly modified and falling out of an airplane to get it under 7.0

There isn't a BMW 335 alive that can stay on the track with a Tesla model 3
The Model 3 just set the street legal track record at Legun Seca this year
The Model 3 at $60K was beating M3's at Leguna Seca that were over $100k fully modded and chipped

:dunce:

Just check Youtube for any race between a Model 3 and a BMW M3 Modded
The M3 gets smoked in the Quarter Mile
Of course they uses the $72K Model 3 in that race

I counted at least 5 things you got wrong in that post. At least 5. Do you really want me to go through all of them?

You obviously know nothing about cars.

Yes, if I want to get in the order queue and wait several months. Show me one I can buy today at $46K that isn't well used. Looking on Autotrader, they're typically listed for $55K-70K. That's why I said "$55K"
Chizzang wrote: and 3.5 sec 0-60 mph
False. That's the performance model, which goes for $64,000, without enhanced autopilot, $71,000 with.
Chizzang wrote:The BMW 335d is 7.0 sec highly modified and falling out of an airplane to get it under 7.0
False. I've measured 0-60 on mine at 4.5 seconds with TorquePro right through the OBD2 port. There's no human error possibility that way. In stock form, 335ds were 5.7 secs. Apparently you pulled 7 seconds out of your ass?

Btw, here's the $46K Tesla compared to my $14K 335d. Spoiler: It only does 0-60 in 5.6 seconds:

Go rent a Model 3 and a Snell M or SA 2010 helmet and meet me at New Jersey Motorsports Park and we'll find out. -- Psst. You'll lose. -- Just a side note, the Tesla Model 3 Performance trim is indeed very impressive at Laguna Seca. LS is a perfect track for testing a Model 3, because it's tiny. Serious performance cars generally go test at the Nordschleife on the Nürburgring, because you can actually wring a car out there.

Like I said, I don't drive $70K+ cars, so I don't really care what an M3 or a $70K Tesla Model 3 does. My $14K 335d will smoke a $46K Tesla Model 3 in the quarter mile. The medium range rwd Tesla Model 3 is only a 13.3 second 1/4 miler. I'm a mid 12 1/4 miler.

And let's be honest. You're completely bullshitting about fitting into a BMW 3 or 5. They can fit anybody who's not morbidly obese. They're very roomy cars. In fact, the front seats aren't drastically different from the 7 series. It's the rear passengers who get the benefits in a 7 series.
Tried to buy a 3 series convertible for my wife. Put the seat all the way back and my head stuck up 3-4 inches above the windshield. So no, I'm not completely bullshitting.

BTW: I got a 14 day delivery on a $64K Tesla Model 3
and 7 day delivery on a $72K Model 3
So you might want to "Use google" because your numbers are seriously off

Run a fact check on your GM / Ford sponsored bad news articles (Trump style press)
Tesla is delivering perfect Model 3 vehicles in vastly under reported numbers

and by perfect I mean perfect
But that ruins the prevailing bad news cycle
sponsored by the companies delivering more expensive inferior vehicles

I was just using $55K as a quick figure on Tesla's available today. You're going even higher, so I'm not sure you're helping your argument here. They're very expensive cars for what you get. That was my point. If you just want to rip a fast time at the 1/4 mile strip with a $55K production car, you'd go buy a Corvette Stingray and trounce a Tesla 3 rwd. (11.8 secs vs 13.3)

Let me know when I did that.

Because I didn't.

Again, I've got you grasping for straws. I hate seeing you get put in that situation, yet here we are.

Let's try to stick to facts.

BDK is the Tesla basher. Not me. I root for Tesla. I really want them to get to an economy of scale where it would make financial sense to buy one. Right now, only a Prius or a diesel is in the "makes sense" category, and I don't really want to drive a Prius.

Leguna Seca Street legal track record.... held by Tesla
and NOT a BMW at any price

:coffee:

114,000 units sold

BMW won't publish their units sold on M3 vehicles that compete on the track with the Model 3
(But) Estimates rage around 6200 world wide

114,000

6200

The M3 is not designed to be a mass sales car. :dunce: It's a halo car, at one of the lower series in the BMW line. I wouldn't buy one, new anyway. They're drastically overpriced for what you get. I'd rather have an E46 M3 and mod the shit out of it.

Re: Govt Motors to recall 8,000 Chevy Volts

Post by 93henfan »

I'm starting to detect a pattern as I read the Tesla fanboi sites Electrek and CleanTechnica.

CleanTechnica, as I noted earlier in this thread, is run by Tesla investors. They state it at the bottom of their page.

As far as Electrek, I'll let this Tweet by Electrek owner and publisher Seth Weintraub speak for itself:
Every single article by CleanTechnica and Electrek fluffs the Tesla and bashes, in particular, the BMW M3. It seems to be the benchmark they are hoping the Tesla can match.

Why do I bring all of this up?

Let's go back to a quote referenced (but not linked) by an unnamed poster earlier in this thread. The quote was:
The Tesla Model 3 just broke the Leguna Seca production model speed track record

"The Model 3 even managed to beat some “track-prepared BMW M3’s” coming in at over $100K

“It was faster than a number of track-prepared BMW M3’s, some of which came on a trailer and aren’t street vehicles. Our Model 3 is 100% street and of course passes smog and noise regulations."
So I used Google (as unnamed poster said I might want to try) and found that article.

Guess who published it? Our good friend Seth Weintraub at Electrek!

Here is the link: https://electrek.co/2018/12/12/tesla-mo ... ev-record/

Now, you'll find a very interesting nugget about halfway into the article, tucked conveniently right after an attention-grabbing YouTube video:
But to be fair, while the vehicle can be considered a “production vehicle”, it did get a suspension upgrade from Mountain Pass Performance.
WhoWHAT?!?!?!?

This so-called "production vehicle" had been gutted of the Tesla production suspension and upgraded with a custom suspension. Suspension is absolutely critical to performance on a tight road course such as Laguna Seca, and they are passing off an aftermarket custom tuned suspension as a production vehicle?

This is intellectual dishonesty.

So what can a true production Tesla Model 3 really do around Laguna Seca?

I have to give Mountain Pass Performance some credit. They didn't attempt to deceive the public like the Tesla investors at Electrek did about the Laguna Seca run. They present the facts:
A huge congratulations are in order to our friend and client Cameron Rogers who just took his Performance Model 3 back to Laguna Seca to see how much quicker he could go after installing a pile of aftermarket parts, including our suspension arms, brake lines and prototype AWD Sports coilovers.

With the bone stock Performance Model 3, Cameron ran a 1:46.8 lap time at Laguna. After adding our MPP components, as well as custom brake pads, racing brake fluid, Maier racing front + rear spoilers, Track Mode, and Hoosier A7 DOT-street legal tires, Cameron ran 1:41.28! This makes it the fastest road-legal EV to ever turn laps around Laguna Seca, and we’re incredibly proud to have contributed to Cameron’s achievement.
https://www.mountainpassperformance.com ... tuned-p3d/

So, the real "production car" performance of a Tesla Model 3 Performance at Laguna Seca is 1:46.8, a full five and a half seconds slower than the lie we have been told.

I don't doubt anything you say about the Vette, but the Model 3 is no winner either. It kind of reminds me of an 89 Buick Riatta coupe with a grille block. It definitely didn't get the looks they gave the S.

Thats true

My biggest complaint about the 3 (without having driven it) is that ugly front end

Im sure Id get over it after driving past the first gas station though

Just keep in mind there's no free lunch. I know one Tesla 3 owner in Maryland and he's been very frank about his increased electricity bill with the Tesla. They do suck a lot of juice. Certainly not the cost of gas, but not a small fraction of it either. He's getting hit harder too because his electric is much more expensive than the co-op I get my electric from.

There's really no economic case to be made for the gas savings though in a $50k-$120k car.

That was a striking thing about our trip to CA this summer (started in San Fran, left out of San Diego) - you'd see a Tesla almost once a minute, and even more so outside of Palo Alto. Heck, the Tesla was sometimes the vehicle they left out on the street in those parts.
In the 3 yrs we’ve been in Charlotte, I’ve noticed an increasing number of Tesla’s. I think it’s great. The price and style isn’t there for regular joes but once it is, I hope Tesla does for electric cars what Ford did for everything, essentially.
