Got the news during a college bowl game, that Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash, delivering disaster relief to Nicaragua earthquake victims. One of the all-time greats on and off the field.

I remember that New Years Eve well, when we heard the news we just sat there for quite awhile, totally killed the party.

Great player and a class act. Got his 3,000th hit with his last at bat.

Trivia Tidbit: Yankees killer Bill Mazeroski, who was to retire at the end of the season, pinch hit for Clemente in his next scheduled at bat. They had played together on the 1960 Pirates team that beat the Yankees in the World Series.

John Blanchard was catching when Maz came to bat. At a Roger Maris golf tourney in Fargo, Blanchard told me the pitch he called that went over Yogi Berra' head in left field.
