Also, in his press conference a few minutes ago, he said that federal employees going without pay see the benefits of holding out for a wall.

Yeah, I'm going to let my mortgage company, car finance company, electric company, gas company, phone company, ex-wife at child support time, etc all know that my nonpayment to them is but a small price to pay to keep the brown people out.

I'm sure they'll agree.

Well, if they don't, I'm sure the bankruptcy lawyer will work for me pro bono, because who doesn't want better border security? It's far more important than putting almost a million people out of work.

Dude - you should have had a side job at Wawa already lined up for this contingency!
I already have a side job. I'll just have to ramp it up a bit.

Post from a friend who works for the Border Patrol:
Irony is Customs and Border Protection employees (like me and my wife) that are the agency tasked with securing the border are feeling this shutdown more than most out there. We are both working, not knowing when we will get our next paycheck. Supposed to be next week but if the shutdown continues we will miss a check--sure we will get back pay but in the meantime we have bills to pay. I am lucky enough to have been around a while to have an emergency fund but our new employees are taking it in the shorts. Trumps "months or even years" statement sure didn't do much for morale.

Shutdowns never accomplish anything but pissing people off.

I'm sure the "months or even years" comment gave many 20-something federal employees with college loan debt and many older employees with poor savings habits the vapors.

I'll be fine for a few months, as I previously posted, because I'm a saver. I could also loan my way for a long time after that, though I doubt it gets that far.

I guess the thing that pisses me off is that every President has at least been decent to federal employees during a shutdown. Trump has just been hateful toward us from jump, for no reason. We are not Congress. We are not the swamp. We're just middle class people who pay taxes and are trying to make a living.

I am not only off the bandwagon, but I'm kind of looking forward to the Mueller Report and maybe a little jail time for the orange family in the future. What goes around comes around, motherfucker.

He's made about 400,000 new Democrats in the past two weeks, so he's probably right.

Trump can get his Wall very easily. All he needs to do is threaten (and be willing to do it), to rescind Kennedy’s January 1962 executive action allowing for the establishment of Federal employees to unionize.

The three EOs he issued last year trying to whittle away at EO 10988 were already overturned by the courts.

He can threaten all he wants.

...this Court has concluded that, although the President has the authority to issue executive orders in the realm of federal labor relations, many of the challenged provisions of the Orders at issue here effectively reduce the scope of the right to bargain collectively as Congress has crafted it, or impair the ability of agency officials to bargain in good faith as Congress has directed, and therefore cannot be sustained...

Are some of you people who have historically supported Trump starting to come around to thinking he's mentally ill yet? Just wondering.

Until the Dems can make some sense, I will support Trump. Forget the tweets and bluster, most of his policies are sound. We also have to do some work on the Southern border which was ignored for over 50 years.

No, they are not. Like he is going overboard on the regulatory reform thing. And his trade war stuff is doing serious damage. Also he and other Republicans lied about the effects of the tax cuts. Another thing is that what he and his allies are doing in terms of working to discredit the FBI and Justice Department because they are worried about covering their asses is causing serious damage. This country would be better off right now if Hillary Clinton had been elected President. There is no reasonable doubt. And I say that as someone who, if asked during something like late 2014 before the 2016 election season started. would have said that Hillary Clinton being elected President would the the absolute WORST thing that could happen. Now I know that wasn't the case. Something worse has happened.

Republican Congressman Bill Hurd represents this District:

Image

He also voted with the Democrats this past Thursday to restore funding to agencies. He does not buy into the Trump wall idea:

phpBB [video]

He is a former CIA officer. He had tours of duty in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. He was undercover in Pakistan. That may be a factor in his belief that the money would be better spent on an "intelligence led" approach.

And if you're wondering based on his appearance: He is not Hispanic.

So I guess we need to ask ourselves if we think a former CIA officer who represents that District or a former con man involved in New York Real Estate with no involvement in border issues knows more about what is needed at the border.

Got a call from one of my airline clients.

They're deciding to hold off on NTPs for three small capital improvement projects until the shutdown is done and they crunch the numbers to see how much revenue was lost during the shutdown.

Earlier, the tariffs cancelled about five projects of mine due to higher-than-budgeted costs. And now three are on hold (which will likely be cancelled if history repeats itself). These are private projects which suppliers, fabricators, tradesmen, engineers, architects, and other well-paying jobs lose out on...for no good reason. And of course the client can't make the improvements on their services.

Just chaos.

The chaos is where the real costs of the shutdown creep in. I was a construction contracting officer in the previous shutdown, and we had to stop-work massive multi-million dollar projects. The increased equipment rental terms, the increased per diem, the inefficiency... all of those things have real dollar consequences that eventually get paid by the Government. The last shutdown cost the taxpayer $52.5M per day according to OMB.

I think of the real impact to lives. I wonder what the minimum wage people who clean my office are doing right now. I wonder about all the NIB/NISH people (blind and severely handicapped) on contract whose daily routine is completely thrown out of whack and what their caregivers are doing when they are bringing in no money. I wonder about all of the food truck vendors who usually have a line of me and my coworkers starting to line up each day right about now.

Real bills start getting missed this week for people who live paycheck to paycheck. 800,000 civil servants miss a paycheck this Friday. Active duty Coast Guard will miss a paycheck on Tuesday of next week.

All because three people refuse to compromise.
