Traffic has been absolutely AWESOME since the shutdown. My evening commute has been cut in half. Not joking.
It's certainly more important than the person that can't pay their mortgage, or the low-income family which saved up for years for a National Park vacation and it's closed, or that pesky possibility of a recession.

Enjoy your commute though!!!

No, but I did just stop automatic contributions to both of my sons college funds ten minutes ago and I'm going to the unemployment office tomorrow to start the paperwork for an unemployment insurance claim. I'm good on my rainy-day fund until about April 1. I was expecting this shutdown to be over by tomorrow, but it appears Trump is content to withhold the livelihood of my family and 850,000 other families until he gets his way.

But I'm glad you're not impacted at all. That's all that matters.

I have seen Trump try to negotiate, but Pelosi and Schumer refuse to even talk. I have been through these too, so am not unsympathetic to Fed workers. We skipped 2 paychecks before it was settled, funny thing though, don’t remember now why it was shutdown.

Funny, Dems don’t even care about DACA anymore.

Oh so you "lost" your job on the whim of management? Now you know how it feels for millions of those in the private sector. Welcome to the real world.

No, the world has not and will not end because of it. Right now the negative consequences have already become evident to a large number of people. And for as long as it continues, as it continues, the negative consequences will become evident to more people. If it continues for long enough the negative consequences will become evident to just about everybody. Actually we can leave the "just about" out. It'll be "everybody."
850k people is not a "large number of people" when compared to the entire labor force. You realize that it is unessential gubment folks who are not working right now don't you?

Honest question, is anyone outside of the beltway really affected by this "shutdown"*?

*Let's be real, this is just going to be a paid vacation for all those folks when it's all said and done. Bank it.

Trump had two years with a GOP congress, approved every budget, but now thinks illegal crossings is a national emergency...when it's at the lowest in decades? And let's not forget the shutdown began before Dems took the House, after a bipartisan bill with a voice-vote of 100-0 was sent to the President (which McConnell won't even introduce to the Senate anymore).

This is on Trump; he even said he'd be responsible for a shutdown...and most America agrees. :coffee:

And a small portion of America is impacted.

Speaking of national emergencies:
There are a lot of national emergencies going on. In fact, there are 31 active national emergencies declared under the National Emergencies Act.

I haven't really looked into the national emergency angle yet, but if that is the route he goes and it's legal, then fvck it why not? What's $5B among friends?

If you've read ANY news at all, you know that's not an honest question.

TSA, coast guard, border patrol, park staff, tourists, contractors, etc.

Only 130K directly affected live in the DMV area.

So why didn't he declare a national emergency in the last two years, when illegal crossings were a little worse, even though Congress gave him minimal money for the wall (which he barely did anything with)?

Actually no, I've read no articles on this. No joke. A link for the bolded would be nice.

Don't know, ask Trump. I really don't care. A wall won't completely stop the issues pouring over the border, but it would certainly help. Anything to give a helping hand to those working class families that have their wages impacted by illegal labor is a go in my book.

It sucks for those impacted, but I'm mostly just pointing out the irony of the "small gubment" folks on here screaming bloody murder when their gubment check is getting held up for a few weeks...almost as loud as those SNAP recipients screaming about their reduced food stamp aid...almost...

The irony in this place sometimes is just too much to handle.

There won't be a wall for 15-20 years if they start tomorrow. Isn't that ironic :coffee:

If people got serious and behind building a wall, it could be done in 3 months.

All that possible border wall money is going to sucked up by shortfalls and economic malaise caused by the Trump induced government shutdown. :thumb:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House is laying the groundwork for declaring a national emergency that would let President Donald Trump build sections of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, possibly using funds from the Army Corps of Engineers, the Washington Post reported on Thursday, citing two unnamed sources.

NBC News, in a similar report, said the plan called for building 315 miles (500 km) of border barrier by declaring an emergency and tapping a $13.9 billion Army Corps fund that was set aside for U.S. disaster relief and prevention projects.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa- ... SKCN1P5012

Using funds appropriated by Congress for specific disaster relief is:

a) probably unconstitutional
b) a dick move

I imagine every court, including a conservative SCOTUS, would strike it down.

Now would be a really good time for the Bundy’s to start running their cattle on some fresh winter feeding grounds again.
