Mike Mussina, Hall of Fame

Post by JoltinJoe »

Ballots publicly revealed to this point to Mike Mussina likely getting the 75% of the vote needed to get the call from Cooperstown.

Yankee cap or Orioles cap? What do you think and why?

I say Orioles cap since he wasn't on a championship Yankee team. Also, pitched in more games with the O's and had better stats with them.

Orioles. I had actually forgotten that he pitched with the Yanks at the end of his career.

I'd go in as a Yankee

Mussina getting in pretty much means we'll see Schilling elected in the next year or two now.

Publicly revealed ballots are closer concerning Edgar, but right now he looks good too.

Once Mussina gets in, Schilling will get in within a year, two at most.

Schilling would be in already, but for his big mouth.

Although the player is consulted, he does not have the final decision any more.

Whether or not a player is considered "a Yankee" is a debate I have seen for almost 50 years.
It's something Yankee fans love to argue about.
And it is different with regard to HOF cap vs. Monument Park recognition.
Yankee fans are much more liberal on the HOF cap and much more strict on MP.
I've heard all the "required" criteria mentioned (drafted, some time in Yankee minors, traded to Yankees before they became good, World Championships, etc.).
I can remember one of my early "debates" on this subject was Catfish Hunter and Reggie Jackson.
There were some easier ones like Willie Randolph (began career with Pirates).
Some a little tougher like Paul O'Neill and Tino Martinez.
Mussina might be more difficult than Scott Brosius.

O's

Don't forget that when he joined the Yankees they had just won 4 WS titles in the previous 5 seasons. That team was packed. But he had a .645 winning percentage with O's vs .631 with Yankees.... O's only had four winning seasons while he was there.

In 1995 Mussina went 19-9 on a team that went 71-73 thanks to the strike.

5 of his lowest 6 ERA seasons were as an O.

Big fish little pond.

HOF voters are rather sanctimonious. I'm good with that as long as that attitude keeps the steroid cheaters out. :thumb:

That will only confirm that the Hall has become the Hall of juiced players and small ballparks at high altitudes.....

I'd say Yankees. I had actually forgotten that there was a team called the Baltimore Orioles. :kisswink:

I'm not thrilled with this. Walker has better cred, IMHO....

They Yankees franchise originated in Baltimore, failed and sold to New York, where it became the most successful franchise. Baltimore eventually got a new failing franchise.

Mussina pitched so slowly it drove me crazy. It took 5 minutes for him to come to the set position. You could take a satisfying dump between his pitches.

And crap, now Trump of all people is talking up the Schilling HOF case. This could potentially derail Schilling's chances of getting in the HOF now. :ohno:

Votes are already in for this year, so the Trump Factor won't come into play until next year. Better hope for the 75% this year.
