A much needed sweep. The Mets suck right now, the Phillies better beat them. Also, the Mets will get better when they get healthy, the Phils could make things easier on themselves by opening up a big lead before that happens.

Now would be a nice time to start winning at home. The rest of the division sucks but they are still hanging around.

22-1 beat down* of the Reds. 10 runs scored in the first inning, all nine starters had at least one hit (including Cole Hamels). WOOOOSH!

ehh not sure if im dissapointed or not. Shouldn't have pinch hit for the pitcher in the 8th ahead 16-1. Still impressive game for the offense... Boston coulda used a batter or two tonite.

8 of the 10 first inning runs scored after there were two outs and none on. The Red bullpen came in banged up and tonight didn't help. The starting pitcher, Cueto, didn't make it out of the first inning.

Reds shortstop Paul Janish pitched the 8th and allowed 6 runs, including a grand slam by Werth. Janish has pitched 2 innings this year and has allowed 11 runs for an ERA of 49.5. He throws in the low 90's, but there must not be any movement on the ball, it looked like batting practice.

Cueto's 4th best 2.69 ERA also plummeted 1 point and is now at 3.45.... I thought this was going to be a tough pitching match up.

ESPN is reporting that the Phillies are interested in Pedro Martinez. They are going to watch him pitch in a simulated game in the Dominican Republic.

If Pedro can still pitch this is a great move, especially since the Phils won't have to trade any players away to ge him.

Don't know if I like this... Pedro has been in the tank for a few years, plenty of teams have not signed Pedro and weren't impressed with his current pitching abilities (85 mph fast ball), also he is asking for a $5 million contract with incentives.... The Phillies don't need someone with a 5+ ERA who can only pitch for 5-6 innings... they need a solid pitcher who can get out there for 6+ innings and have an ERA around 3 or lower. Pedro is not the way to go.

They aren't many pitchers available with an ERA around 3 or lower, and the ones that are won't come cheap.

You are right that nobody has signed Pedro. He'll have to show the Phillies that his arm still has some life and he'll also have to lower his asking price. But I still like the move if he can pitch. At the very least, he is worth a look.

Agree on both of your points... the Phillies don't really have the money to spend with their current salary and getting another "Ace" or #2 man isn't cheap. It is worth it to look at a pitcher who at one time was the best in the league.

Not only that, but whatever salary the Pedro receives will be prorated for the length of the remaining season. If he only pitches 1/3 of the season a 5 million dollar a year contract becomes 1.67 million.

2 out of 3 from the Reds... should have been a complete sweep.

In other news, I came across this little gem this morning
HALLADAY UPDATE, PHILS AS FRONTRUNNERS

By JOEL SHERMAN

I have talked to a half-dozen baseball executives this morning and the general consensus is that the Phillies should be viewed as the front-runner if Roy Halladay does get traded. Boy the news keeps getting worse and worse for the Mets New York Mets .

More than one of the executives used this term: "No team in baseball is more motivated to get a starter than the Phillies." If I were to synthesize what was said about the Phillies and Halladay it is this: 1) They are a now team and Halladay gives them a major boost in trying to repeat. 2) He is a groundball pitcher, which only makes him more attractive to a club that plays home games in cozy Citizens Bank Park. 3) He is dominant in the AL East, so the Phillies have to think his stuff would play up to a greater degree in the NL. 4) Philadelphia has volume in good to very good prospects, but might not have the one sure thing to front a deal for a player as special as Halladay unless the Blue Jays see Kyle Drabek, Jason Knapp, Dominic Brown or Michael Taylor in that way.

The entire Phillies outfield is now on the allstar team.... Phillies have some pretty sick hitting stats for the first half of the season. If everyone maintains their level of play in the second half, the phillies could potentially have four players all hit 40+ HRs, 100+ RBI and score 100+ R with a combined batting average around .275
NEW YORK -- Jayson Werth has become the latest Philadelphia Phillies outfielder to make the National League All-Star team.

Werth was added to the roster Friday to replace injured New York Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran.

The first-place Phillies have three outfielders on the NL team for Tuesday night's game in St. Louis. Raul Ibanez was elected by fans to start and Shane Victorino won a spot in fan voting for reserves.

Of all the things to nitpick over, your suggestion is just plain dumb. Umless you intend to let the pitcher pitch in the 9th, which the Phillies didn't, it's dumb to make a relief pitcher hit and not let one of your bench guys get an at bat.

Good for Jayson, he has earned it with his first half numbers.

Phils score 5 in the bottom of the 9th and beat the Pirates 8-7.
Matt Stairs led off with a pinch homer, Ryan Howard hit a 3 run blast to tie it and Paul Bako got a bases loaded single to win it.

Pedro Martinez may be flying to Philadelphia on Monday, WCAU-TV reported on Sunday night.

It is believed Martinez on Tuesday will take a physical, which appears to be the final obstacle standing in the way of the 37-year-old right-hander signing with the Phillies for the remainder of the season.

I think so, as long as he passes the physical.

Phillies sign Pedro to one year deal, immediately put him on 15-day DL....

ST. LOUIS -- Pedro Martinez has signed a one-year contract with the Phillies.

The club confirmed the signing Wednesday morning, and said that Martinez will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a mild right shoulder strain, and that it had not determined when or where he will begin a rehabilitation assignment.

A news conference was scheduled to be held at noon ET on Wednesday.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. declined comment just hours after Martinez passed his physical on Tuesday in Philadelphia. But one source said the contract is worth about $1 million, plus about $1.5 million in incentives, which is less than the prorated $5 million contract Martinez reportedly had been seeking earlier this season.

Phils thrash Cubs, 10-1! 9 straight wins and a 6 1/2 game lead! They're on a serious roll, boys!

Phils thump Pads 9-4 behind Hamels to regain 6 1/2 game lead. Cards in town for big weekend series. Looks like Happ, Lopez and Blanton will start for the Phightins.

Nice win but I'm still a little worried about Hamels. They gave him an early 4-0 lead and he lets the Padres back in the game with 3 runs in the third. At some point I'd like to see Hamels ratchet it up a bit and pitch like an ace.

I also think the Mets are dead. I don't see them making a push later in the season, this could be an easy September for a change.

Off to the West for a road trip to Arizona and SF. The Giants are tough at home and are in the wild card hunt, so that should be a good series. Phils need to take at least two of three in Phoenix.

Phils 6, Arizona 2. Hey, dback, what's with the Dbacks? They even made Moyer look good.

Yeah, I just caught the highlights last night and it sounded like the stadium erupted when Howard went deep.
