Reminds me that in 1966, UCLA's freshmen team, with Lew Alcindor, defeated the Varsity by 15 points. UCLA was coming off back-to-back NCAA championships. Alcindor, later Kareem Abdul Jabbar, was not eligible to play varsity, per the NCAA rules, that Freshmen could not play varsity. The next three years, UCLA was 88-2 with Alcindor at Center, and 3 NCAA Championships. The NCAA also outlawed the Dunk shot per Alcindor.css75 wrote:Idaho State 76 UCLA 75 in 1977 NCAA Regionals.

In 1904, Minnesota Gopher, Bobby Marshall was the first African American to play football in the Big Ten. In 1920, along with Fritz Pollard, Marshall became the first African American to play in the NFL, a 40 year old rookie. He played thru 1924. Marshall also played baseball for the University of Minnesota and the St Paul Colored Gophers. He also played hockey, wrestled, boxed and ran track.

Yankees were victimized when they picked up that contract and then it was discovered that Arod's numbers were steroid-influenced. The Yankees, thus, were victims who did not ultimately did not get what they bargained for, as Arod's production dropped after the steroid disclosures.

2000 US Open at Pebble
Aside from winning by 15, (and I may have mentioned this before) I had some buddies who were caddies there and claimed Tiger beat the field in match play over the course of the 4 rounds.

And remember, Rivera blew the save in that Game 7 when Tony Womack hit that double to tie the game. I don't believe Womack has ever been tied to steroids, other than possibly when he was a Yankee in 2005 and Roger and Andy and ARod were sharing needles and using the creams.

Re: Greatest sports achievements ever
Hey, it's a horse but it's sports. Secretariat.
Near the end it says "That is a record that may stand forever." And it stands today.
Secretariat won the triple crown in 1973. He holds the record times for all three races 46 years later. I mean really. That was a freak of nature.
And the thing is, I think he could've run the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes faster than he did if they'd let him go. In those two races they held him back and let him sprint at the end to win.
Just a complete genetic anomoly.

Re: Greatest sports achievements ever
Since today is Kentucky Derby Day it's time for another Secretariat video. See below. Notice how in that one Secretariat hung back. Near the rear to start. Then when he turned it on it was over for the other horses. This relates to what I wrote in my last post. In the 1973 Belmont Stakes they let Secretariat run from start to finish. They didn't do that during the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness Stakes. I think that if they had the results would've been complete demolition of the fields as the Belmont was.

Re: Greatest sports achievements ever
I already covered Secretariat earlier in the thread, and you haven't even covered his most impressive move to me, which was in the Preakness. Turcotte held him back to last going into the first turn, and he passed every horse on the outside before they even got to the backstretch and STILL set a track record that still stands today. It was insanity. And yes, the Belmont finish is also insanity. That shot of the camera tracking.him to the wire, pausing for a second, and then the cameraman is like "WTF" and pans the camera back to find the second place horse... makes me laugh every time
