Re: Somali Pirates...
I know it was a big issue in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia in the last decade, but from what I’ve read, was drastically reduced by 2012. One of the countermeasures deployed was armed security on cargo ships & tankers, something the shipping companies were far too slow to implement. Obviously very effective even versus multiple pirate boats. Don’t even need crew serve weapons. Just a couple guys with M4s.
From 2012, looks like a 3 man security team shot up one pirate boat and drive another off.

Drop Omar on a Somali pirate ship from 10,000 feet. That’ll stop it real quick.

Back before the piracy became a problem, people circumnavigating in private boats from east to west would transit the Indian Ocean to the Seychelles, and then up around the horn to the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean.
Now, cruisers opt for Madagascar, Zanzibar, down around to Cape Town before crossing the south Atlantic to Brazil. Those areas have actually seen new marinas pop up to accommodate the new cruising traffic
A captain I was sailing with last November told me that you can still transit past Somalia up to the Suez because there are a couple companies for hire that provide armed escort to sailboats in caravans. Expensive, and your yacht has to be able to make something like 7 knots continuously. I’d like to do that just on the chance to see some pirates get blasted

Have you considered making your trip in a power boat? I've heard that some of the marine diesels have serious range?
