Didn't Reagan grow the Federal Government by something like 43%
That might not be exactly right but it was something staggering

Government is evil, oh wait... here's more money
Right or wrong - none of that changes the premise

Further evidence of my point.

Government is the problem as "truth". It's a simpleton's meme that has the well reasoned CID and UNI88 befuddled.

Can big government be too big? Of course.

Can it be overbearing and limit freedom? Yes.

So if government is THE problem, what's the solution?

That increasing the scope and power of government is not the answer to societal problems.

What's fascinating is that Reagan became a hero by stating the premise
and then doing the exact opposite

it's strange

It reminds me of "clean the swamp"
and then doing the exact opposite

Like Reagan, Trump will be remembered for his rhetoric and slogans
more than any specific accomplishment
he will be beloved

Oh yes, Reagan! He was a great pitchman for selling vulture capitalism under the guise of ‘Murica and freedom and at the expense of the middle class.

When I come on here and lay out Reagan’s economic achievements (or a lack thereof), then all of that will be germane to the argument - or whatever this is

Having a reputation that is incongruent with reality is the hallmark of every President since the first one - with one or two exceptions (and Reagan isn’t one of those)

klam’s boner for Reagan is as outsized as Reagan’s reputation - but he gets a win in this thread for the blatantly obvious but mildly successful troll

I mostly look at Reagan as a historical figure in the grandest kind of way
it doesn't bother me that he's worshiped or credited for all variety of accomplishments real and imagined

:geek:

He's part of American folklore now

Government isn't THE problem, it is a problem and a necessary one at that. The question isn't government, yes or no? The question is how much government.

And I appreciate Reagan for what he accomplished not some mythical ideal that the Tea Partiers and their ilk have memorialized him with. If Reagan were in office today, the alt-right would primary his butt out the door.

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

That's true, but if he were here today would he be the Reagan of the 80s? Would Kennedy be the Kennedy of the 60s? How would he have evolved?

There's a dinosaur running for the Dem nomination today who is arguably nothing like his younger self, politically.

I don't know how Reagan (or Kennedy) would have evolved. I do know that if you dropped the Reagan from the 70s and 80s into today's environment the alt right would attempt to eviscerate him. Yes he cut some taxes and fought the air traffic controllers but he also worked with Tip O'Neill and grew the government.
