Post yours here.

I’ll start with a moderate Republican, his staff, and several of my friends on Facebook getting duped...

It is Mexican. Notice how the shoes the woman and kid are wearing appear to be new and very clean? Aren't they a bit overdressed for July on the border?

Nope, not staged at all.

Your expertise on butts has proved its worth, Jon

That is a Mexican soldier. The camo is not US issue, and the rifle is not US issue. And the butt is not US issue, of course.

It is a Mexican soldier, in Mexico.

This is surprising coming from Reuters... I would have expected it from the NYT or similar.

I accept your analysis of the soldier's attire but the caption doesn't say it's not a Mexican soldier. It just says it's a Guatemalan mother begging a soldier. It also doesn't say anything about where it occurred.

It is misleading John and you damn well know better

It says she is begging to be allowed to enter the US. Exactly why would she be begging anyone other than a US soldier to enter the US?

You’ve lost your damn mind. Where’s Clitz to point out the obvious, since apparently I’m not sufficient?

Here’s the real rub - it is Reuters. They are supposed to be better than this.

Ok I found the article the image comes from and it's not misleading in my opinion. Here it is:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa- ... SKCN1UK2DV

Here's the first paragraph:
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Ledy Perez fell to her haunches, a clenched hand covering her face as she wept, an arm clutching her small 6-year-old son, who glared defiantly at the Mexican National Guard soldier blocking them from crossing into the United States.
C'mon man. Reuters is a reliable source.

How many people do you think read the article?

All they had to do was write “Mexican soldier”. They are journalists and they know better.

Here's another interesting thing in the actual article:

The Mexican National Guardsman did NOT stop the woman from entering the United States. He was not aggressive. I read it to mean his heart was not in it. And then this happened:
All of a sudden, seizing the opportunity when the battle-ready soldier glanced away, Perez lunged into the shrubs growing on the side of the river bank, pulling her son with her. They quickly ran across to the other side of the river and out of the guardsmen’s jurisdiction where U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents took them into custody.
So the woman ended up in the United States, undoubtably making an asylum claim.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth

But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Since you interpreted as meaning something other than it did it is self evident that what they did created false impressions. But I doubt that it was intentional. And nothing in the tweet was false.

I must admit that I am not a Twitter person. I never look at it. Perhaps it would be better if nobody did. To me there is an inherent problem with it in that it's about brevity. Yes, I know you guys like brevity. But I think the Twitter thing is a problem. Lots of brevity and almost zero effort to control accuracy.

And, hey, the original article DOES confirm that CID was correct in his uniform analysis.

Again, I think that the fact that you interpreted the way you did means they didn't handle it in the best way. But in looking at it again it looks to me like the tweet provided a link to the article.

If you say that most people won't click on the link to the article I might agree with that. But it looks to me like the tweet did include a link to the article.

I'm just saying Reuters is a reliable source. I don't think they intentionally mislead anybody.

Another bit of chicanery on the part of Reuters is that they cut off the soldier's head in the frame, but left the uniform, which is similar to the US Marines desert MARPAT utilities and desert RAT boots. Plus, their obvious target audience in this propaganda would know nothing about weapons.

This is what you choose to plant your #MAGA flag in the ground for? Good **** grief.
Manipulative media is good for nobody, Jearf

If it was MSNBC or FOX it wouldn’t be post-worthy. But this is Reuters.

If Trump’s attacks on the media are important, then media malfeasance should be, too. I think you can agree with that.

This is ridiculous. The tweet shows a woman interacting with a soldier. It doesn't say it's an American soldier. And the tweet has a link to the article. The article states in the first paragraph that it's a Mexican National Guard guy.

This is how bad it is with this "fake news" and "liberal media" propaganda and paranoia. It's not "fake news." Like with what happened with the Muller report. One reason it had limited impact is that just about everything significant in it had already been reported on by the mainstream media. And when they did report things Trump called it fake news. But it wasn't fake news. It was the truth.

It's not the the media don't make mistakes at times. They do get it wrong at times. But they get it right way more often than they get it wrong. And the overall picture they've painted with respect to Trump Administration, its impacts, and the Republican Party at this time is accurate.

People i the Trump cult don't like the media because the media are after the truth and Trump's whole modus operandi is deception and misinformation. Thats why he's attacked the media for the start. He knows the truth is his enemy so he doesn't want people to believe the truth when they hear and/or see it.

The tweet was misleading. You have to read the article to learn that it isn’t a big bad American soldier denying entry. And most Americans won’t read the article - we prefer the Cliff’s Notes.

I gotcha. So she’s begging a MEXICAN soldier to let her across the US border.

Read that again, John. You’ll see how stupid it sounds.

My understanding is that our troops...national guard or regular...would not be involved in something like that. My understanding is that they have no direct role in stopping people from crossing the border. That's ICE's responsibility.

When I first saw that tweet and saw that you thought it was misleading I thought you it might lead people to think it was a Guatemalan soldier when it was really a Mexican soldier. I'm not kidding. The idea that it might be perceived as a US soldier didn't enter my mind until later when I could see where you guys were going because my understanding is that you would not see a US soldier in that situation.

If I somehow saw that tweet without having had this conversation I would not have thought that was a US soldier.
