Yes it is. For one a soldier from Ft. Bliss, who realized as a black man, he'd probably get shot if he drew a weapon. Instead, he helped evacuate the store.

The black soldier was in the mall, not Walmart...and I’ve found nothing where he says anything about being afraid to pull his weapon because he is black...

Uruguay on Monday issued a warning to its citizens traveling to the United States after two mass shootings over the weekend that killed 31 people in Texas and Ohio.
One thing I’ll say about the mental health issue -
I dealt with many mentally ill people over the years as a cop on the streets. These are people who we think of as clinically mentally ill - paranoid schizophrenics, manic depressives, those types. Off their meds or agitated, and given the right set of circumstances, they will kill you for sure. In police work we talk about the 3 “Ds” that cause dead cops more than anything: Drunk, Drugged, and Deranged.
But those people aren’t mass shooters. They don’t go and acquire a gun and then plan out mass shootings. That requires a level of functionality that the clinically mentally ill just don’t have.
With the people committing mass shootings, there’s a very heavy dose of sociopathy involved that doesn’t fit into the range of what we usually think of as mentally ill. These people are on the same spectrum with all of us “normal” people - they are just off on one end of it. It is similar to the squeamishness my daughters feel about slaughtering animals ... they are horrified by it, and would even have a hard time watching me gut a fish. But I grew up on a farm, and hunted frequently and am desensitized to those things.
I am convinced that there is one factor at play with these shooters in every case (among other varying factors). These shooters, in many cases, are young and grew up with the internet and mobile devices. There is an increasing body of work that suggests that these devices and the internet are standing surrogate for normal human interactions in early childhood and adolescence- the period where people generally develop things like empathy, revulsion to cruelty, compassion, etc. Studies are showing that levels of depression and sociopathy can be proportional to the level of immersion online. Shooters differ in ideologies (or a lack thereof), and in terms of upbringing, but I think that as we move forward and more data becomes available, behavioral scientists are going to point to this as a major factor with mass shooters in terms of what makes them CAPABLE of killing so many people at once. The actual triggers probably vary widely but the capability to commit these acts likely comes from a very narrow set of circumstances. That’s my hunch

You kind of hit on what I was thinking while reading your post when you referenced sociopathy. From what I've read sociopaths and psychopaths are similar. And I'm thinking psychopaths. Like Ted Bundy. I think he was definitely mentally ill but he was able to plan things out. I think Charles Whitman was a psychopath as well. Different kind of mass shooting. But a mass shooting.

At heart, Hare’s test is simple: a list of 20 criteria, each given a score of 0 (if it doesn’t apply to the person), 1 (if it partially applies) or 2 (if it fully applies). The list in full is: glibness and superficial charm, grandiose sense of self-worth, pathological lying, cunning/manipulative, lack of remorse, emotional shallowness, callousness and lack of empathy, unwillingness to accept responsibility for actions, a tendency to boredom, a parasitic lifestyle, a lack of realistic long-term goals, impulsivity, irresponsibility, lack of behavioural control, behavioural problems in early life, juvenile delinquency, criminal versatility, a history of “revocation of conditional release” (ie broken parole), multiple marriages, and promiscuous sexual behaviour. A pure, prototypical psychopath would score 40.
A score of 30 or more qualifies for a diagnosis of psychopathy.
I'd be willing to bet Trump would score at least the 30 needed for the diagnosis.

There’s a big distinction between psychopaths and sociopaths though - in fact, I think they are the epitome of nature (psychopathy) vs nurture (sociopathy). Both can be highly functioning, but psychopathy involves the proverbial “loose screw” that can be contained via medication, while sociopathy is something we all share to certain degrees. On a scale from one to ten, with ten being the worst, I’d put mass shooters at ten. I’d put myself around 4 because I can’t stand being around people.

Short version: It's not the availability of "assault-style" guns that's caused the youth of America to go off the rails.
We have the highest rate of gun ownership anywhere and we have the largest number of mass shootings (four or more victims). The country that has the second highest rate of gun ownership (among countries of 10,000,000 or more population) is Yemen. The country with the second highest number of mass shootings is Yemen. Maybe I'll look for it later but the research came out of the University of Alabama in 2015 and was done by somebody named Lankford.

So what. We've ALWAYS had the highest rate of gun ownership, yet this "mass shooting" thing is a relatively recent phenomenon. Something ELSE changed....I'll let you figure it out.

All psychopaths are sociopaths. But not all sociopaths are psychopaths.
