kind of a lot of DEFCON over hunting season...
the wolves will reach carrying capacity soon enough and balance will be restored... the bitching and moaning for the hunting crowd that nature is doing it's job rather than being out-of-balance and necessitating human intervention seems a bit... selfish. "but i WANNA shoot the elk!! *stamps feet and pouts*"
and yes... I'm happy (and I live in another place where wolves are making a comeback)
right on cue for your "shit list" it's another one of those "attempted insults that become a badge of honor" things

Re: Hope you fuckers are happy
I'm with the Griza here, but I will let him do the cussing. Saving all mine for the "entitled elite" conk fucks over on the health care thread.
problem is nature boys, the west has changed dramatically in the past hundred years. When free roaming herds of elk, bison, and pronghorn roamed everywhere west of the Mississippi, there was a balance, and predators and humans could both find game when needed. Wolves and even grizzlies also inhabited the same range, yes indeed, all the way to the Big Muddy.
Now there is very little range, and what is left of the big herds of ungulates is pinched into and near the mountains, and the very few wilderness set asides.
A pack of wolves has to work pretty hard to catch and kill an elk, moose, or bison when the game is played on hard ground. Game changes with deep snow, the prey has no choice at all and even a couple wolves can kill dozens of elk bogged down in the snow, and they do.
The herds had not been hunted by wolves for decades, so they had no knowledge of them either. It is indeed a blood bath.
End result will be, and please take note of this, there will come a time when it is realized that there is no choice but to take to the skies and shoot all these wolves down at taxpayer expense.
This IS going to happen, and when it does, the cost of the removal will far exceed the million dollars each it cost to bring these wolves down from Canada.
Also, just for good measure, the Canadian Grey Wolf is NOT native to Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming.

Don't disagree with your statements. I'm glad to see the wolf population rebounding...and also gald that a hunting season has been allowed to keep population in check. And we shouldn't be paying millions to exterminate nor bring anymore wolves down from Canada. BTW, cattle ain't native to Montana either, but we don't mind exterminating one native species (wolf) to accomodate another....Wedgebuster wrote:I'm with the Griza here, but I will let him do the cussing. Re: Hope you fuckers are happy
Griza, word is my areas, 50, 51, 52, and 53 will suffer huge cutbacks in elk licenses in 2010. Currently there is a thirty day archery season for any elk in September, a 21 day General License hunt for antlered elk in October, and limited quota hunts for each area in the hundreds for mostly antlerless and a few any elk (trophy bull) tags in November. I have almost always bought a general license and hunted antlered elk in October.
Proposed for next year, combine all four areas and have a limited quota draw for a total number of 100 elk licenses, and that is it. Don't know what the dates would be, but I would guess my odds of drawing one of those would be around 20%.
I have always been able to buy a general license for those areas, and I have done so every year since 1970.
And, yes, it is the wolves that have brought this on us.

This is going to kick the hell out of the non resident hunter's ass, bad. We have a quota on out of state elk licenses set at 20% of the available licenses. Where there were as many as 250 non resident license holders in these areas in the past, there can only be 20 starting next season. There is that many outfitting businesses spread around these areas. They are on their way out of business.
Check those maps I had you research, area 50 is Beartooths located between the Clark's Fork River North to the Montana line. Area 51 is Crandall which is a famous hunting area located South of the Clarks Fork River to the Yellowstone boundry. Area 52 is another famous hunting area located South of the Clarks Fork River and including all of Sunlight Creek drainage to the divide between the North Fork Shoshone, and also to the Yellowstone boundary to the West. 53 is Dead Indian Creek drainage South of the Clark's Fork River to the divide between Dead Indian and Trout Creek drainages. This is a huge mountainous area man, huge.

No singular industry exterminates as many elk, deer and antelope as allowing livestock to graze on public lands. It's not in the best interest of timber or livestock interests to publicly admit big game, fishing, and Outdoor Recreation is the wisest and most profitable use of Federal Lands. Anything that is in the "best interest" of agriculture is in the "apathetically interest" of our citizens on public lands simply because agriculture gets away with it.
Putting it into perspective, Multiple Use to Wilderness is as repulsive as a Dictatorship is to Democracy. Both don't work except in the Department of Agriculture.
