I agree with you but I also have to ask how much of this is because of choices made by the poor? Do they value education as much as they did in the past? Where are they spending their disposable income? Are they investing it or spending it on material goods (iPhones, sneakers, electronics, nice cars, etc.) that depreciate rather than helping build wealth?

I don't know what the answer is either but I'm pretty sure that the gap isn't growing just because the wealth isn't trickling down.
Where the fuck have you been? Since when are the poor and other "disadvantaged" groups ever held accountable for their personal decisions?

No shit.

True story - lady couldn't pay her utility bill. She's wearing a tank top and has a bandage/cover on her arm. Our billing clerk asks what she did to her arm. The gal pulls off the cover to show a new tattoo. "isn't it cool? It was only $400. Can I please set up a payment plan for my utility bill?" That's only one of the many stories I could tell. :ohno:

In most cases, it takes money to make money. And much of the money is made from investments. I don't see any easy pathway to change that.

The thing about the wealthy is that they support a segment of the economy that can't be supported by lower income groups. Industries like boats, jewelry, high fashion, high end products such as liquor, limo service, fine restaurants, country club memberships, etc. That's a lot of jobs associated with these industries. Redistribution would significantly reduce the jobs in these areas that would not be made up in lower cost industries because of increased business from the former wealthy people.

The income numbers really need to separate out investment income. It's the apples compared to the oranges when discussing "fairness".

And, yeah, I don't have any answers for this either.

So she voluntarily chose to "invest" in a tattoo rather than starting a rainy day fund or invest in the market. It isn't just Jamie Dimon & company's fault that she's living pay check to pay check.

I'm talking about jobs. The upper class is a small group of people that, if income is redistributed, won't necessitate new jobs at places like Amazon and Walmart if they increased their shopping there.
What I'm saying is that the purchasing power of a small number of people help employ a large number of people.

What's the effect on the overall economy? I don't know.
What's the effect on the deficit? I don't know.
What's the effect on jobs? Fairly significant.

WHAT!????????

Larry Kudlow, President Donald Trump's top economic advisor, said Friday that "the deficit" is "coming down, and it’s coming down rapidly," appearing to contradict both the Treasury Department's official figures and government estimates about the trajectory of U.S. budget deficits.

Huh?

You think employment is driven by rich people’s spending?

The purchasing power of a large middle class employs a large amount of people. The rich can’t own enough yachts vacation homes.

'Brutal consequences': Ansell warns China over exodus of manufacturers
Ansell chief executive Magnus Nicolin has warned China of "brutal" consequences as manufacturers leave the country over rising costs and fears at the escalation in trade war with Donald Trump.

"So many manufacturers are moving out of China at breakneck speed. You don't see it in the China-reported GDP growth numbers yet. I suspect that sooner or later it will be visible," Mr Nicolin said.
https://www.smh.com.au/business/compani ... 52gat.html

The Aussie CEO predicts that things will get real bad for the Chinese economy soon...
Mr Nicolin said while Ansell had moved some production out of China "mostly because of (the) trade war, it probably would have happened anyway, because China is frankly a very expensive place to produce in these days. So we can produce a product at 20-30 per cent lower cost in Vietnam or Sri Lanka."

That's been happening. China hasn't been the low cost manufacturer for years now, and they've lost out to Vietnam and the likes. That's partly why they've taken a different political tone lately and turned to the Silk Road concept - if you can't beat them, bind them to you via force and debt while pumping up nationalism internally. I'm sure some could argue that's the way we've operated for the past century.
