Nouriel Roubini
Dec 20, 2014
Economist Nouriel Roubini is back on the circuit with his Doomsday predictions. In an interview to WSJ.com, 'Dr Doom' prophesies that there is now a greater than 50 percent risk of a global recession, and that this is not the time to be invested in risky assets.
https://www.firstpost.com/world/how-ser ... 59685.html

Ravi Batra
"2016 is going to be a year of the climax," says Batra, an economics professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. "It will be a year in which a revolution begins against the rule of money, leading to economic reforms by 2018. After that a golden age starts and is in place around the end the decade."
https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/book- ... 00751.html
Economist Ravi Batra reached the number one on The New York Time Best Seller List in 1987 thanks to his book The Great Depression of 1990. From the title, one can easily infer what was the main thesis of the book, namely: An economic crisis is imminent, and it will be a tough one. Fortunately, his prediction failed to come true. In fact, the 1990s was a period of relative stability and strong economic growth, with the US stock market growing at an 18 percent annualized rate. Not so bad for an economic depression, right?

Is there any sitcom in history more overrated than Friends?

Nah, Friends still holds up, and the funniest episodes are still funny. It dipped, for sure, with the Monica/Chandler storylines, but still good.

Frankly, even though I loved M*A*S*H as a kid, I find it unwatchable anymore.

Of the 70's (early 80's) shows I think that one held up better than most. All in the Family being one of the others.

All in the Family does indeed hold up. I was shocked as to how dated "Cheers" is today, especially the older episodes. "The Cosby Show" is still funny, assuming you can get past the felonies of the title character.

Friends is hot or miss with me.

I can watch M*A*S*H all day EXCEPT for the final season. It got too dark and introspective for me.

I actually liked that show in the first season. But it got too predictable and smarmy (regular folks walking around quoting poems, etc). I imagine Cleets masturbates to that show.

BTW, does a show that ended only 13 years ago count as "holding up"? We were talking about shows that ended 2-3x as long ago as that.

I love "The West Wing", but yes, it did get a little preachy at times, and certainly fits the "government can solve everything" mantra. I remember the one bit, during Barlett's re-election campaign, where Toby and I think Josh come up with the idea of how to solve the problem of affording college - they would give everyone a $5k stipend. There was no follow-up episode where miraculously all colleges raised their tuitions by $5k very soon after.

Oh, and I didn't like how Alan Alda's character lost the election to Santos basically because Alda backed nuclear power as a clean energy alternative and then there was a nuclear accident in California just before the election. The left has been demonizing nuclear energy since the 70's, climate change be damned.

But I still liked the show - Martin Sheen was fabulous in it and they even found a guest role for Danica McKellar (aka Winnie Cooper) in it. :thumb:

I loved Cheers and Seinfeld

I thought Friends was shallow and vapid

(Seinfeld was intentionally shallow which is part of why it was so funny.... )

It's amazing how many great shows went into a deep decline in the sunset seasons. Seinfeld went out close to the top. Many felt prematurely. But maybe they didn't want the inevitable to happen.
MASH, All in the Family, Cheers all imploded in the last few seasons. Some of it was being tired of the shtick. Certainly some of it was characters leaving the show. And writers probably left as well.
(One quick observation about Cheers: whenever they were showing scenes away from the bar (Diane's apartment, Evan Drake's house, etc., they generally sucked. It was like they were out of their element).

I've been watching a lot of Two and a Half Men over the last two years. Never saw it in prime time. The story lines have stayed the same but the one-liners have been well written. They did a good job keeping the show going after Sheen left. Had several good seasons. But the last season got stale. It was the writing on the wall. But overall, the show remained consistent most of the way through. Can't say that about the three iconic shows mentioned earlier.

I've also been watching King of Queens a lot as well. The thing that cracks me up about this show is that I know a couple in VA that are very similar.

Yup. Just the most public aspect of the New Cold War, with the Red Chinese substituted for Russia as the major adversary.

As one small step, I would recommend that Harvard not accept any more Red Chinese students. All they do is use a superior university education (one of the few areas where the US still leads China) to undermine us around the world. Fvck them.

Meh. I was hoping there would be some nugget in there that we haven't already figured out on our own in this thread.

But a Dem win in the 2020 election will not end the Trade War. It will likely lack the almost daily snowball fight on Twitter and in the media, but it will still continue. The Dems know it is necessary to continue. And they know any positive resolution will be considered a big political win for them.
