The race started at 6:55 and their pre-show doesn't start until 8:30 and the race coverage at 9:00, when the race is more than halfway over. But for the Alps stages, their coverage begins at 6:30, right around when the race starts (except for Stage 20, when it begins at 7:00 because the only major climb is Mount Ventoux, which is the final 22 km)
It's because Le Tour is a civilized race. On flat stages, the riders in contention for the overall victory get to race all nice and slow - essentially warm up very nicely. Then once warmed up, their team chases down the guys who have no chance other than a stage victory. Why do you think there is ALWAYS a break away that is caught 2 miles from the finish almost every flat stage? Sadistic bastards let those guys sit out there and fry before they catch them and then contest the sprint.

This "non" racing is a big reason why I like the Giro d'Italia more. They shorten the races, so it forces everyone to race from the start. Not this "lets have some tea, take a piss, then get to racing after 75% of the race is over".

In all fairness, the Tour de France is frikken brutal. They average some disgusting speeds everyday over an average of 100 miles a day for 21 stages. I cannot imagine what that would do to a person. The most mileage I EVER put in when training was 375 miles per week. These guys are doing close to 700 at lightning paces.

Sorry, don't mean to sound like a know it all, but cycling is my favorite sport. I got nothing to add when it comes to football.

Levi Leipheimer is out of the tour after suffering a broken scaphold at the end of stage 12.

Saxo Bank has cracked the Peloton in half. Many of the contenders have been left behind. Armstrong is being tested here.

Hincapie is right now leading the Tour de France. He got into the breakout group and they're now 10 minutes ahead of the Peleton as Astana gave up the chase.

EDIT: Hincapie is around five and a half minutes behind the Top 3 so it'll be interesting how much he gains on them and if Astana chases that group down.

That was very close. Looks like Hincapie missed Yellow by 3 seconds, but official scoring isn't out yet. He'll at least be ahead of Armstrong.

EDIT: He's 2nd overall now, 5 seconds behind and royally pissed at Astana.

Being the good American that I am, I had hoped Armstrong could somehow find that form that won 7 Tours, but I'm pretty sure that the race for yellow is over now. Contador looks like he's on a motorcycle when he decides to step on it going up hill. It remains to be seen if LA can hold of Wiggins and Andy Schleck. I hope he can, but fear he may not have the legs to match the accelerations anymore. Either way, a pretty strong and respectable finish considering all the external factors.

I live in Austin and have gone to the many parties Austin has thrown for Lance in the past. Like others, I would love nothing more than to see Lance take this but, I truly didn't think he had a shot after the years off and his age. I also feel Lance has gone fully into this with the intent of giving Astana, and Contador in particular, the race. Contador may never have another "set up" man like Lance. He will help dilute the lead pack and then let Contador go. Finishing in the top 3 would be an added plus though.

At his age and physical depletion (because that happens no matter how good you are) I don't feel he had alusions to another win here.

The current gap between Lance, Sastre and Schleck makes me uncomfortable

Me too. Lance is riding well, but a lot of guys gained time on him today, and this wasn't a highest category climb. It will be very tough for Lance to hold onto a top 3 spot for the rest of the race.

Nice. :thumb:

Okay day for Lance in the time trial today as he moved up the 3rd place overall. Contador won the time trial and will win the tour barring an accident.

George Hincapie may have broken his collarbone earler this week, but he is not going to the hospital because he may be kicked out of the race if his collarbone is indeed broken.

Big George is THE MAN! I have a few friends who ride in and around Greenville, SC who see him there in the winter all the time. They all say he's the most down-to-earth guy you'd ever meet and wouldn't know he's a pro unless you saw him on TV. I'd love for him to join up with Team Radioshack next season, but I'm sure it won't happen.

Not talking about the same thing, but George is the MAN for taking back control of the lead out train from Garmin today in the last stage. That finish was crazy to see Garmin and Team Columbia battle back and forth for control.

Cavendish is a motor.

I was thinking this after the tour was over. It'd be cool to see Leipheimer, Kloden and Hincapie join Lance. Not gonna happen but one can dream...
