Taylor was a conservative Republican all his life, and helped found the right-wing Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals in February 1944. He campaigned for Republican presidential candidates Thomas Dewey in 1944 and 1948, Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956, and Richard Nixon in 1960. He was a major supporter of Ronald Reagan's campaign for the Governorship of California in 1966. In October 1947 he served as a "friendly witness" before the House Unamerican Activities Committee (HUAC), where he named Howard Da Silva, Lester Cole and Karen Morley as "subversives". All were subsequently blacklisted, partly as a result of his testimony.
