Just got done reading a book on William Leahy, FDR's Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs during WWII, and then Truman's for his first term. Good read. He was a bit of an isolationist, was very much opposed to Truman getting us involved in anyway in the Middle East (whether it was the oil or Israel). Good photo in the book of FDR hosting a member of the house of Saud on a destroyer on his way back from Tehran or Yalta. Let's blame Truman for all of this. :coffee:
I have a neighbor who was the White House photographer during the Truman Administration. Has some good stories.

The US needs to stop supporting Saudi Arabia in every way, then start sanctioning them as well. From their brutal monarchy to their local wars to their funding of terrorism throughout the Middle East...they're simply a garbage nation. We've sold our values to them long enough.

I agree but the void would quickly be filled by China and the sanctions would be meaningless.

I would like to see us try and get out of the ME altogether.

MAQA - putting the Q into qrazy qanon qult qonspiracy theories since 2015.

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

Agreed

The ball started rolling for us on the ME after WWI and now geopolitical structures have evolved around that paradigm to the point that we have no good immediate solution

One solution is energy independence but of course the left doesn’t like what that entails

Chinese hegemony in the ME would be a global catastrophe but I don’t know if it would be a fait accompli if we pulled out... at least not in the long term. TBH I wouldn’t mind seeing China in a resource-eating quagmire like that. But maybe it wouldn’t be as much of a quagmire for them because they don’t clutch their pearls over “war crimes”, real or contrived

The irony of the Saudis sucking up to China and ignoring the persecution of the Uighurs would be interesting.

Yep, and its a mistake.

Of course the right doesn't like what it entails either but for different reasons.

And Chinese hegemony is coming to the planet regardless.

I’m not sure what part of “energy independence” isn’t liked by conservatives

Last time I checked it wasn’t conservatives protesting shale sand pipelines

I should have said Big Oil. I imagine since a lot of their perceived worth comes from reserves in the ground they wouldn't be very happy to see those reserves become worth less money due to alternatives.

That isn’t how it works with the oil companies, but OK, I guess

They don't carry their reserves on their books?

That depends on who “owns” the mineral rights where those reserves are in the ground.

Are you saying Exxon Mobil carries Saudi reserves on their balance sheets?

And if so, how would it be disadvantageous to Exxon Mobil for us to replace Saudi imports with indigenous sources that Exxon Mobil also processes?

I'm talking about their reserves in the US, the world's largest oil producer, which would change value if they became less necessary. Although I suppose that the bottom line is that the Saudi reserves are our reserves.

the disadvantage to Exxon wouldn't be from anybody's oil it would be losing sales of oil-generated energy to other sources

Should we take Houndie literally? He is a Bernie supporter. Bernie is a socialist who wants a centrally controlled economy. The eventual evolution of such a system will be similar to China. So yes, Houndie wants us to be more like China.
