Why Trump Will Win Again

Post by kalm »

You'd expect the support to strengthen from the deplorable types, but the surprising thing among my conk friends (business owners, professionals, etc) is how much they've dug their heels in. They are more angry and pissed at the "liberals" than ever before and Trump is not an embarrassing lesser of two evils...he's their white knight.

What are the odds right now of re-election?

During the last two weeks I made the same rounds — a high-school football game at my alma mater, talks with Mexican American professionals, some rural farm events. Were those impressions three years ago hallucinations? Hardly. Trump support has, if anything, increased — and not just because of record low unemployment and an economy that has turned even my once-ossified rural community into a bustle of shopping, office-construction and home-building, with ‘Now Hiring’ signs commonplace. This time I noticed that my same friends always mentioned Trump in contrast to their damnation of California — the nearby ‘stupid’ high-speed rail to nowhere, the staged power shutoffs, the drought-stricken dead trees left untouched in flammable forests, the tens of thousands of homeless even in San Jose, Fresno and Sacramento, the sky-high gas prices, the deadly decrepit roads, the latest illegal-alien felon shielded from ICE. Whatever Trump was, my friends saw him as the opposite of where California is now headed. His combativeness was again not a liability but a plus — especially when it was at the expense of snooty white liberals. ‘He drives them crazy,’ Steve, my friend from second grade, offered..............

When I talked to a Central Valley Rotary Club in November 2016, I assumed on arrival that such doctrinaire Republicans would be establishment Never Trumpers. But few were then. When I returned this week to speak again, I found that none are now. These businesspeople, lawyers, accountants and educators talked of the money-making economy. But I sensed, as with my hometown friends, that same something else. There was an edge in their voices, an amplification of earlier fury at Hillary’s condescension and put-down of deplorables. ‘Anything he dishes out, they deserve,’ one man in a tailored suit remarked, channeling my grade-school friend Steve. I take it by that he meant he and his friends are frequently embarrassed by Trump’s crudity — but not nearly so much as they are enraged by the sanctimoniousness of an Adam Schiff or the smug ‘bombshell’ monotony of media anchors

For me it's different. I didn't vote for him in 2016. But I will in 2020 (at least it's looking that way, considering the direction the Donk field is headed) DESPITE the "combativeness". But its because of the FIRST sentence (and a number of other positives), and in SPITE of the last sentence.

And where is the $4,000 each household Trump promised us from his massive tax cut that benefited corporations and the wealthy enacted in 2017?!

It didn’t trickle down to us, it stayed in the corporate board room with Trump’s big donors.
https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-mete ... lthiest-1/

As the Congressional Research Service found recently, Trump’s tax cut resulted in corporate profits that “grew faster than wages" and worse, "ordinary workers had zero growth in wage rates."

The real-world result is that wage growth in virtually non-existent. In 2019, after you subtract inflation of nearly 2 percent, the average American worker will see a net wage increase of slightly over 1 percent. One percent!

The main thing helping Trump is that Democrats suck at politics.

You can move to the left on economics or embrace "social justice" politics...you can't do both.

This is anecdotal I know but, over the holidays my family and I spoke a lot of the upcoming election. With the exception of one sister, most of my family are 100% "Republican". They'd never vote for a Dem. Every single one of them voted for Trump in 2016. Out of the 12 adults, only 1 has admitted that they'd vote for him in 2020. The rest pretty much want him to STFU, they want the Dems to STFU and don't plan on voting in 2020. Being in the Low Country, their county and our state is a lock for Trump.

On the night of the impeachment, my sister, brother in law and I watched the House vote. They are the most likely to be centrist in our family and have pretty much written off Trump. Mom told me that she'll vote for a Dem in 2020, for the first time ever. She then asked what I knew about "this Pete fella," and said she's likely to vote for him.

A few friends of mine from high school, one of whom is a political reporter in DC but are all Republicans have some serious Trump-fatigue. It was an interesting holiday.

Were there any reasons given? Is it because they agree with the policies of the Donks over the Conks?

My own anti-Left feelings are much stronger now than they were in 2016. I will never vote for a Democrat for elective office again, even if that candidate is unopposed. In the latter case, I will write in 89Hen.

It varies. Mostly they don't approve of his character, he seems un-principled to them, his bluffing and BS with tariffs ,etc... They agree that while not proven they are certain he tried to get the Ukraine to interfere. The economy is good and all, but that isn't everything.

Their vote in 2016 was an "Anyone But Clinton" vote.

When I was a young lawyer, I served on the New Castle County board of canvass to certify the 1980 election results. That’s where judges would hear challenges to ballots, voter registrations, and the like. What I remember most are the write-in names. A local gadfly named Llovable Lloyd Teitsworth, who wrote lots of sarcastic letters to the editor, got about 3 votes for POTUS that year. Also the usual smattering of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, etc.

Always more room here in the Keystone state!

I won't ever vote for Trump - even with liking some of his policies (China for instance) I can never justify his behavior enough to vote for him. Voted Jill Stein last time as a true protest vote - Hillary was far too corrupt in most every way and Trump was Trump. I don't see myself voting for Bernie or Warren (I'm not sure Warren even makes it to the convention) but I would vote for Mayor Pete. Age is one factor, and he certainly tracks to being more of a moderate than Bernie would ever be. Heck, kalmie may even call him a corporatist. I don't know if I'd vote for Biden, though, he's the real question mark for me.

I’m not anti either side. I’m anti party. Haven’t voted for either in a national office election since Obama appointed Geithner which was later validated by Holder. I might change that this year and vote for Chris Armitage in the 5th District race to unseat Cathy McMortis Rogers. Veteran, masters degree in Homeland Security, worked in law enforcement, business owner, no PAC money. He’s progressive on many issues but I would think his experiences tempers that a little. He’s also reaching out to rural towns a la Tom Foley who was able to hold the seat forever in a deep red district.

Progressive, business owner, service record, rural support checks many boxes for me.
