If Trump wins again, it's 'cause America has a sh*t Constitution and citizens have no idea what a good Democracy looks like.

And honestly no matter who wins, it will continue to be a garbage system.

The situation remains the same. Trump won under a unique set of circumstances. His opponent had been under FBI investigation through much of the campaign. Then Comey dropped his bomb shortly before the election. Meanwhile, there was division on the Democrat side due to Sanders fans thinking he got screwed. And the Russians exacerbated that problem with the e mails hack. The situation in the swing states was much more a matter of less support for the Democrat candidate than it was the Republican gaining support. The most extreme example of that was Trump winning Florida in spite of getting a lower percentage of the vote in that State than Romney got in 2012. He also won Wisconsin in spite of getting fewer votes in that State than Romney got (the percent he got was higher but that's because overall turnout was down). He won Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin without getting majorities of the vote in any of those States. Black turnout was down.

If the Democrats develop enthusiasm among the people that normally vote for them they will win. If they don't, they won't.

The bad news is that I'm seeing indications that Sanders wants to do the same kind of disrupt the apple cart crap he did last time.
Wrong. Sanders was the apple cart and the DNC did the upsetting and fucked themselves in the general election when they ratfucked Bernie in the primary - the ne plus ultra of "hoist by their own petard" in the history of American politics. If they pull the same shit with superdelegates this time the Sanders people stay home again. He's drawing bigger crowds than anyone in the field and raising more money too and he's doing under a near-total media blackout.

Just calling out the bullsh*t when I see it: our system of governance is garbage. It promotes neither fair representation in Congress nor good democratic philosophies. And it promotes the tyranny of the minority or majority, and very little in between.

You'd think people who claim to hate our Govt would get that, but y'all love it cause it allows your views to be undemocratically influential.

Fortunately it's still a free country and you can leave and go somewhere with a system that you perceive to be better.

I love the “the system must be broken if Democrats don’t win” philosophy

Didn’t this same system support Barack Obama for 8 years? And now it’s a broken, garbage one?

I won’t argue with that.

And you consistently complain about it no matter who is in office so gold star for you

But Treep fits in the majority of people who would not be talking about a garbage broken system if You Know Who had won in 2016

I agree that it has flaws, particularly with the amount of money involved

But I know what leftists like treep think is wrong and I disagree - I like for all states to have a place at the table... representative Republic and all, something something

I think turnout is going to be incredible. Most think that will benefit Democrats, but I disagree. There is an army of Republican voters who didn't vote for Trump in 2016 who I think will turn out. If they do it in PA, MI, and WI, game over for the Democrats again.

Trump has done a terrific job of nailing several of his promises, and in particular, the ripping up of NAFTA and making China blink in the tariff war plays really well in the Rust Belt.

America is the people I love...the community I deal with day to day. Hating the style of governance we're in doesn't mean I hate America.

You forget to remember people (aka. America) are more important than any idea. Seems like you'd rather spend time defending ideas written by the long-dead you've never had a meaningful relationship with, instead of defending the living surrounding you.

Why don’t you draft a better one, then? Design a system that is ideally small-d democratic (at least as you define the term) and guards against both “the tyranny of the minority or majority.” Show your work. :coffee:

Yes really.

We are indeed a nation founded on ideas. But are ideas still meaningful without the people who they grant rights to? I’m not sure you can separate the two. And can’t ideas change and evolve along with our understanding of the universe and culture? Or should we go back to the southern compromise?

I didn’t say his response was perfect but it was a solid defense of his prior bold statement and worked him out of a corner, which surprised me. I guess I just appreciate all ideas. They don’t frighten and confuse me.

America is no different from France or South Africa in terms of its people... we aren’t special as a group of folks

America is precisely an idea - founded on the principles of The Enlightenment - which recognizes that governments exist to protect and guarantee the natural rights of man

It is an idea that continues to attract those “huddled masses” to our shores... in spite of our garbage, broken system

There are maoists on this board? Ooooh...that’s sounds downright scary!

I get what your point is and agree that rights transcend nationality but that doesn’t invalidate Tripp’s defense. What is mentioned first in the Preamble and the Constitution...people or ideas?

Our system is broken, Trip provided a damn good reply.
