Also doesn't hurt that Gates teaches a class on racial studies or whatever it is if he get's involved in a high profile case his own self. I'm not saying he manufactured this but it doesn't hurt his teachings at all to have "personal experience" with it whether it is manufactured or not. I'll guarantee that the last time the house was broken into he was saying something along the lines of "Where's a fucking cop when you need one!"

He may not be a douchebag but but he's acting like a real fine replica.

I've listened to detailed reports of the Gates incidents from both sides, and TECHNICALLY the officer was legally justified for his actions. I did the LE thing for 17 years. Most of that was in patrol, with a little bit in investigations and narcotics. I supervised all kinds of cops. I must have run into this same situation a million times. I was mostly in our downtown district that was mostly black. Sometimes, the "here's my ID, no problem here" scenario played out. However, more often than not, there was hollering and yelling, black man can't be left alone in his own house, blah blah blah. Maybe the whole belligerent, uncooperative attitude is cultural, like the hispanic machismo, I don't know. Sometimes we were able to satisfy whatever reason we had for being there and were able to leave. usually with the guy yelling at us the whole time.

Imagine doing that for years... the same old thing, the same old mantra, over and over and over. Add to that the occasional high profile case like this one when suddenly all cops are douchebags. Imagine sitting in a diner at 0300 trying to get some breakfast between calls with some a$$hole drunk in the next booth mumbling about donuts and bacon. Add to that the knowledge that you have always given everybody an even break... I delivered a couple babies, comforted countless mothers in grief, attended many murder scenes, returned runaways home, performed CPR, pulled an old woman out of a car submerged in a canal, mentored inner city kids, even bought groceries for a mother so she could keep her kids. These people were all black. Yet night in and night out, I get called racist, spit at, have piss balloons dropped out of apartment windows, and about once every two or three weeks I got the privilege of going down to Internal Affairs and grilled by some ladder climber about whether I was rude to some guy or put the handcuffs on too tight after arresting him for beating down his baby mama.

I'm no hero, either. For every one bad cop there are 1000 guys just like I was. Giving everyone an even break, and trying to be as fair as possible while enforcing the law. I got fed up and tired of it about two years ago. I called my marker due for past work in the foreign affairs community, took a new job, and hung up the badge. My blood pressure and budding hypertension are now under control after only 5 months off the job. And you know what? I have all the respect in the world for the guys still doing the job. I pulled up to an Arlington County cop last week and just told him thank you. But I pity those guys, too, because it is the most thankless, onerous job in the world. Even military guys eventually get to come home from war. Cops are at it from day one until they quit or they die.

James Crowley, the officer who arrested Henry Louis Gates, Jr is the very same James Crowley who performed CPR on Celtics star Reggie Lewis about 16 years ago. He was called a racist for not doing enough. I can only wonder what it is that keeps him going to work. If I was a private employer I would offer the guy a job shoveling sh!t. It would be an improvement over what he does now.

As for the public, I can finally say piss on the public, especially in Charleston, SC. You're on your own. I hope they replaced me with a young guy who still thinks he can save the world (although you do not deserve him). I just hope he has the good sense to get out before it kills him.

From what I've read and heard, I have to side with the cop here. Gates was belligerent while in the house - and followed the cops outside after they left while continuing to be a problem. Neighbors who witnessed the arrest said the same thing.

Obama should have kept his mouth shut.
