Here's the thing, Trip. I don't doubt that amongst the 44% who are in the group we're discussing, there are outliers who meet circumstances similar to those you describe. But they are just that. Outliers. And NO system is going to be perfect and lift EVERYONE up. There will always be, in every system, a subsection of people who sadly fall through the cracks. Sometimes, shit just happens. But, you know and I know that there's a better than average chance the guy picking up trash smoked dope all the way through school and dropped out in the 10th grade. You know, "life choices".∞∞∞ wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2020 10:13 amNot really how it works; might suggest reading Nichomachean Ethics by some little known dude named Aristotle.

That dude in the street picking up trash might've been booted after a vulture capitalist bought out their job, the person cleaning your hallway may have been a Doctor in another country, the retail clerk might have been dropped out of school to take care of their sick parents.
So get out of here with "ain't life choices a bitch" garbage.

I'm talking about the "or less" part. But the ones who DO have a HS diploma better go get some technical or trade degree or they're gonna be working low wage jobs the rest of their life.

Utter bullshit.∞∞∞ wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 1:30 pm And the US has absolutely moved to the right...this nation grew out of the New Deal, unions, taxing the rich, heavy government investments into science, medicine, and education, implementing a federal minimum wage which kept up with inflation, etc.
Neoliberal policies born out of Reaganism have completely destroyed this nation's middle and lower class. The rich are hording wealth, pension plans are practically gone, people can't afford going to the doctor, kids go into tens of thousands of dollars into debt for a an education, buying power has decreased, we've become a rent-nation, US debt is at an all time high, should we go on?

I've been kicked in the shorts by life a few times. I make less than 1/2 of what I'm worth and I struggled to land this job after getting laid off twice and saying the hell with it and teaching for 5 years. Now that I'm working again, I could probably find a better paying job but I like the people and the location and I'm willing to sacrifice money for those things. Life is about choices and occasional sacrifices. I could have stayed in Illinois and complained about not finding a job but I moved to Oregon away from my kids. I have little sympathy for people who complain but aren't willing to put in the work (high school diploma/GED, trade school, military, etc.) or make the sacrifices to improve their opportunities.AZGrizFan wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2020 10:15 amHere's the thing, Trip. I don't think the government should take money from AZ or anyone else because someone thinks he makes too much. Life isn't always fair and the I don't want the government to fvck things up trying to make it fair.
The solution to the fortunes of birth is creating equal opportunities not equal outcomes. Our education system needs to be better but every time the federal government gets involved they fvck it up worse than it was before. There are also issues with hope and culture. I taught in schools where the majority of students were Latino. What most differentiated the students who did well from the others was involved parents and peer groups that were focused on academic success. For too many, it wasn't cool to do well or be respectful in school and those students were more likely to make lots of bad "life choices" that limited their future opportunities. The Green New Deal and other social welfare programs aren't going to change that.

Dudes, no one wants to take money from AZ. No one gives a sh*t about people with a few 100K or a few million.
It's the f*ckers who horde enough wealth to last lifetimes, to the point where they can sit on it and contribute nothing. It's the ones who have enough that their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren can live comfortably without ever contributing anything meaningful. And it's the corporations who aren't fairly compensating workers for increased productivity.

There are a multiple problems with that. One, those people you want to take the money from can move that money overseas and change their citizenship to protect it. Two, why can't Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, etc. keep their money and direct where and if they want. They took the chances and built the companies that made the money, they earned it. Three, when I look at the Progressive wish list (Green New Deal, Medicare For All, etc.) I have a hard time believing that there is enough money to be taxed to fund all of it without reaching deep into the middle class.∞∞∞ wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2020 11:34 am Dudes, no one wants to take money from AZ. And why don't we put a 100% tax on all of the earnings of federally elected officials that is greater than their federal salary. That would stop scoundrels from using their position in government to profit from speeches, book sales, etc. Bernie and Warren should propose this.UNI88 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2020 11:45 amThere are a multiple problems with that. Tax them at 100%. We're still about $75 trillion short for all the Dem wet dream programs. So at some point, they WILL give a shit about people with a few hundred thousand or a few million (I like how Trip just ASSumes he knows what income category I'm in).
Tax the rich. Feed the poor. Until there are no rich no more.
