Overblown yes...we sensationalize everything. But I keep seeing things from credible sources that this has some serious potential to be disruptive. Imagine a US town of 50,000 on lockdown. Another tidbit I learned today is the 5 confirmed cases flown to Spokane that came home from China (Sacred Heart is a facility qualified to handle them) are all asymptomatic.

:suspicious: It's not basically the flu, it's exactly the flu... only less deadly.

COVID-19: Approximately 2,871 deaths reported worldwide; 0 deaths in the U.S., as of Feb. 28, 2020.

Flu: 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year.

Excuse me, a virus that acts very similar with symptoms just like the flu.

It’s literally not exactly the flu.

The three main cold viruses are coronaviruses, rhinoviruses, and influenza. 20% of common colds are due to coronaviruses.

I don't think there's enough to say this strain is less deadly than the flu, or deadlier; more research needs to be made. Most people with common colds don't go to the doctor and we still haven't clarified how contagious this thing is. The death rate might go down significantly if it ends up being far more wide-spread than first believed. Of course the mortality rate could be higher, but we just don't know.

I simply don't understand how you (or anyone else) not involved in the science can simply declare a brand new coronavirus which only appeared three months ago as "exactly the flu." They're literally different strains of viruses.

My quote function doesn’t work

But I’m replying to your flu post

This particular strain of the virus is 1) more virulent (that means contagious, which means it hops from host to host more easily) and 2) it is more lethal than any current strain of influenza

Influenza is in every corner of the globe. We are literally its hosts as it lives within every community on earth. It mutates and then makes us sick again. It kills the very young and the elderly

The COVID-19 disease is barely a blip compared to the flu. There are likely still less than 200,000 victims in the world. It kills the elderly and middle aged men with preexisting conditions like diabetes which slows the healing processes in the lungs. Children are some of the least susceptible to its worst effects so far (and it is unknown as to why)

In terms of global reach and infection rates, yes, the flu is currently worse. But make no mistake- the novel coronavirus is much easier to catch and kills a higher percentage of its victims than influenza. I would readily accept infection by the flu rather than catch this bug

It's probably not real. No record of it online - quoted or otherwise - and the WayBack Machine has two snapshots of his Twitter account on the 5th (one which is near midnight) with this tweet no where to be found.

But this is hardly the first time conservatives post or fall for fake stuff on this site.

Also I searched this image and so far it's only been posted on TigerDroppings, Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook. Or rather I guess, Google bots have only found them on those sites while crawling.

I'm not saying that it's been confirmed to be false. But I HAVE noticed that there is a big problem with false memes coming from the conservative side. I told that to somebody on Facebook just the other day. They had posted a conservative meme which I was able to determine was definitely false and I responded referencing the information demonstrating it as such. And I said that I am a conservative but that we have a big problem nowadays with false information coming from the conservative side.

I said that I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a false meme coming from the Liberal side on Facebook but I see false memes coming from the conservative side virtually every time i look at Facebook. It's a big problem.

That’s cute when you consider that CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC and NBC all stream fake news 24/7 and liberals eat that shit with a spoon. And yet you dipshits have the gall to call out conservatives for a few fake memes.

Seriously, you can’t make this shit up (pun intended).

I have enough FB friends of all ages to know that pretty much everyone over about 60 years old sucks at the internet, and a lot have poor skill at identifying fake memes or even half-true memes designed to get them worked up. It doesn't really matter if conservative or liberal, though it does seem that there are more conservative fake memes floating around. Many of them were probably cooked up in Russia. They're very efficient at playing the American public like that. They're also the same ones calling up old people and posing as their grandson in jail asking for bail money or ransom.

You can't fix feeble-minded.

Twitter. It's all over the place.

If it's fake so be it. I'm sorry. I should have done a better job of vetting it. Based on the TDS that many have you could see this one as plausible.

Where did you get all your fake news about the Russia hoax jelly? How does this work? Do I need to disappear for several months?

I have a pretty balanced FB friends list and although anecdotal, I see a fair share of confirmation bias - fueled gullibility across the spectrum. Each side says literally the same things about the other, while denying they do it themselves.

I think you illustrate the problem. CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC and NBC do not stream fake news. They are all characterized by some liberal bias, with CNN and MSNBC being more biased than the major broadcast networks are. But they do not report "fake news." I think the mediabiasfactcheck.com summary on ABC News fits all three of the broadcast networks:
Overall, we rate ABC News Left-Center biased based on story selection and word choices that moderately favor the left and High for factual reporting due to proper sourcing and a reasonable fact check record.
I also think their MSNBC summary fits CNN as well:
Overall, we rate MSNBC Left Biased based on story selection that consistently leans left editorially. Although pundits and hosts have failed a few fact checks, straight news reporting is usually factual and sourced, therefore we rate them Mostly Factual for news reporting.
That is what you're dealing with. It's not the same thing as what's coming from the right. A large proportion of people on the right are consuming a constant barrage of outright false information and they insulate themselves from the truth by refusing to believe "the mainstream media."

Meanwhile, here is the mediabiasfactcheck.com summary for the single most prominent source people on the right tend to rely upon:
Overall, we rate Fox News strongly Right-Biased due to editorial positions and story selection that favors the right. We also rate them Mixed factually and borderline Questionable based on poor sourcing and the spreading of conspiracy theories that later must be retracted after being widely shared. Further, Fox News would be rated a Questionable source based on numerous failed fact checks by hosts and pundits, however straight news reporting is generally reliable, therefore we rate them Mixed for factual reporting.
Add to that the fact that a lot of people on the right are listening to people like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity on the radio then logging onto social media and seeing the barrage of false memes and what you have is a substantial proportion of the population believing a bunch of false stuff while dismissing what credible sources have to say because their own unreliable sources are telling them not to believe them.

BTW I agree that the severity of illness associated with this coronavirus is similar to some of the more severe strains of influenza. I don't think it's THAT big of a deal in terms of threat to human populations.

However, I don't think what's going on is hysteria created by the media. I don't think the Chinese responded with the aggressive attempt at containment they applied because of the media and I don't think the stock market is doing what it's doing because of the media. Well, maybe you could say that it wouldn't be happening if people didn't know about it at all and the media play a role in people knowing about it. But I don't think this is driven by the media. The media didn't make airlines decide to suspend flights to and from China, etc.

The situation caused people to change their behavior in ways that disrupted commerce. The media always tend to hype things. But they could've reported this in the least sensational manner possible and this economic thing would still be going on.
