Gene sequencing shows that the virus has been spreading quietly in WA for about 6 weeks now

That is actually good news - it means that most sufferers don’t feel sick enough to see a doctor

Bad news for you and me though, old man

HIGHLY unlikely. Even IF a relative of someone on this board (or one of us) got it, only about 2% chance of dying.
Do you have any middle aged male relatives with type 2 diabeetus or othe conditions?

If they catch the virus their lethality probability chances go up to some uncomfortable levels

I was reading, but don't know how accurate, that the US pretty much consumes all it produces.

We are one of the few countries that is able to pull our own resources, manufacture the products and purchase them within. Fairly contained.

If Coronavirus doesn't go too big in America, we should be looking pretty good compared to other countries that were reliant on global supply chains.

On a separate note. The local high school, was shut down for a day due to Coronavirus fears. Also reading lots of long term care adults in my area are sick as well.

Goes to what CID said. I think Coronavirus is already here in the greater Seattle Metro area.

I went to Giant this morning to get a loaf of bread and the section was about 80% empty. Curious, I went to the water section and it was emptied out except the expensive brands. I slightly get the bread if people think theyll be staying inside for a while, but water lol?

Sounds like Seattle area stores when there is news of a snowflake dropping in the area. Mad run on cash, water and food.

I'm on a well. Good as long as the power grid is up and running. If not, I don't know what size generator id need to run the pump. If the infection rate reaches 40-70%, some cities might have trouble with maintaining their utilities.

If there's no grid power you're not going to be able to get enough gasoline to keep your generator running anyway. So better fill the bathtub now!

Internet says around 700 watts once you get the pump running, but will need 2100 watts to get it started.

The generator I just bought has 3800 running and 4700 starting watts and was around $500.

Unless the operation is down for weeks, I think people forget their hot water tank can be used to get...water.

If you've got the tankless type though, you're screwed.

edit: and not that it matters in a power outage, but I've got my condensate hooked up to a five gallon tank with a liquid level indicator. I use it for watering plants in the summer, but I guess if needed, it's 5 gallons of gray water which can be filtered. :twocents:

If you had tickets to a JMU game with 10,000 tickets sold, and you knew 200 people that went to the game would die, would you go?

And ~2000 people would need to be in an ICU after the game.

Closing down the school district tomorrow so they can set up virtual classrooms, but that is not the issue.

I had to wade through the most verbose ass covering email to finally get to that tidbit. So worried they won't say the right thing, they waste space with filler.

The real death rate is way less than 2%. It's probably less then the annual flu. We have no clue as to what the denominator is. And at this point, people will seek treatment immediately going forward. Many people try to fight off the annual flu on their own and some think it's just a bad cold, until they die. And with a worldwide focus on this one virus, we'll have effective treatments available quickly.

The CBS medical reporter last night said the death rate is estimated to be 1.4%...just over the rate for our current flu strain...
