Re: Coronavirus
You're a moron if you think a few hours in an open air stadium, or even a high ceiling arena, is worse than 8-15 hours on a densely packed aluminum tube.∞∞∞ wrote: ↑Thu Mar 12, 2020 2:35 amIt was a WEAK ass response, and possibly a dangerous one where passengers will now circumvent point-to-point travel and spread this to uninfected regions of the world just so they can get to the US.BDKJMU wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 9:07 pm
So you think hundreds of people at a time should continue to cram into a tightly confined, small space, shoulder to shoulder, for 7-12 hours at a time, basically a flying petri dish, criss crossing the Atlantic, thousands of times a day, from dozens of European airports, from one infected block of countries (the EU), to another. Got it.
I bet you're fine though with banning large crowds in the US, which BTW aren't as crammed or in as tightly a confined space as an aircraft, and are generally for much shorter periods of time than trans Atlantic flights.
The speech wasn't a weak response at all.
If the EU wants to ban US citizens for 30 days, so be it.
Nations are dealing with this successfully without travel bans, then you've got a dumb ass doing little at home and tanking the economy.
Also you're completely misinformed about airplanes being human petri dishes:
https://www.livescience.com/62060-respi ... ssion.html
Large gatherings ARE worse. Do you think scientists are asking to ban large crowds instead of imposing travel restrictions based on nothing but their feelings? See: human history.
https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists ... aeroplanes
And if COVID-19 is more contagious than the regular flu, with its ability to last on surfaces longer.
https://www.livescience.com/how-long-co ... faces.html
It makes ZERO sense to ban crowds in the US, close schools, close workplaces, and then still allow 2k+ daily flights, with hundreds of thousands of DENSELY packed people, more densely packed than they are in schools, workplaces, or stadiums, for longer periods of time, from the hot spot of COVID-19, that has open borders, to the US.
Trump failed in that he didn't announce this ban earlier.

The UK has an open border with the EU until the end of the year. People can just circumvent the UK if they want to, spreading the virus where it may not be. The best way to deal with this isn't travel bans, but focusing on protecting the homeland and having proper responses when cases occur. Start testing people at a mass scale if we want to actually prevent this from spreading, and allow people to stay at home without having to suffer financial setbacks (would be easier if we had universal healthcare, UBI, and/or codified leave times).![]()
As far as what this thing turnouts out to be, I'm leaning along the lines of 93's thinking as far as health impact. The economic impacts will be hard, especially on travel/tourism industries but they'll bounce back when this thing runs it course. When that will be remains the question.
All I know is Disneyland better stay the fuck open as I have a trip with the fam scheduled there in a few weeks. Hoping for short lines and a less crowded environment.

Re: Coronavirus
Yes, that ban should've happened two weeks ago. Europe is all up in arms that we did it without collaborating with them, but then they're at a loss as to what would've been the outcome if we had talked to them anyway. The EU spokesperson on NPR this morning was saying we could've just relied on self identifying forms as a means of control, but even the NPR folks were scoffing at that.
Of course, Trump also got a lot of crap when they announced a ban on flights from China back when this was all just conjecture and still just starting and was accused of racism or scapegoating China at the time. Politics have not been rising to the occasion during this epidemic.

MLB and NHL are joining the NCAA and NBA in shutting 'er down, but as of now I still have to drive to Sarasota on Saturday morning for a gymnastics meet. That's 1000 people crammed into a tiny gym.

Yeah, indoor sporting events, youth included, probably should be cancelled, or at a bare minimum be done with no spectators at all. I'm good with outdoor ones still going on, albeit with spectator restrictions there as well.SunCoastBlueHen wrote: ↑Thu Mar 12, 2020 10:37 am MLB and NHL are joining the NCAA and NBA in shutting 'er down, but as of now I still have to drive to Sarasota on Saturday morning for a gymnastics meet. True. Which includes travel restrictions. How are you going to do a "social distancing" on a plane? Or on mostly full trains, buses, or stadiums, etc.kalm wrote: ↑Thu Mar 12, 2020 4:01 am∞∞∞ wrote: ↑Thu Mar 12, 2020 3:49 am
Maybe, maybe not. Can you tell me if it does? Can Trump?
WHO certainly doesn't think it'd be effective at this point.
Travel ban aside, yesterday's speech was also an indication that the administration is focusing on the wrong stuff. He's treating this as some foreign entity that can be stopped at the border when the thing virus is here for weeks now. If he really wants to fix this, he needs to go on prime time again and detail the ground game the federal government is going to implement, not just some limp-wrist travel restrictions.
Being dismissive, and treating the virus as some weird enemy of the state, is a very dangerous game.![]()
This shit ain’t political and it’s not going away anytime soon. We’re past prevention and into mitigation. It’s going to take a very quick and massive response (like literally constructing temporary hospitals and staying home...today) in order to realistically flatten the curve.
In a free and open society we are at a much higher risk and we are already behind.
China did their own internal travel restrictions, which seemed to have worked. Italy is doing their own, which remains to be seen.

This virus is here, steps are being taken to limit how fast it spreads and that includes importing additional cases via air travel to Europe. In addition to the Fed; State, county, and local agencies/entities are already taking actions they see fit. I think it's already too late for a travel ban (BTW closing the borders worked great for Russia), but I'm not opposed to taking the steps deemed necessary. Not sure why you feel otherwise and in fact, seem contradictory to your "shut down big local gatherings" you posted yesterday.
Good point on Russia. Looking at the site:
https://www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboar ... 7b48e9ecf6
they are only 28 cases, about 48th on the list, despite sharing a border with China.
Still think the travel restrictions can slow the spread some, but should have been done earlier.

People keep saying that. For weeks. People lie Z ranting about the Media instead of taking it seriously. The Non-Right wing media has been more accurate on this than the walking disaster of the hoax in the White House who is unprepared, incompetent and making matters worse
Telling people that your lives will change, " You can no longer do what you want, when you want, how you want and with whatever means you have", to me, sparks panic. Especially when it's repeated over and over. You aren't sounding the alarm. Cuomo did that last night after the address. Yes, we all realize that something serious is happening here. Forget about comparing it to the flu, something is happening and it's having an incredible impact on our society. As I said previously, I think the matter of fact manor in which Dr. Fauci gave us information the other day was the way to go. He wasn't emotional about it. At least that is how I perceive it.
And again, Trump did better than I expected last night. He was a bit robotic and clearly can't read from a teleprompter. But he sounded sober. Better late than never. I think his response to tell everyone "within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero" was extremely stupid. Calm people down, be factual and not hyperbolic.
