Counter-urbanization

Post by Col Hogan »

Is the Wuhan Virus “the End of New York”???

I just finished an article entitled “The End of New York”...and while it is full of a lot of D’uh’s (Large urban areas are hardest hit by pandemics, and the suburbs and rural areas have natural protections...
Cities like New York pay a price for being both dense and cosmopolitan. As a new study from Heartland Forward reveals, the prime determinants of high rates of infection include such things as density, percentage of foreign residents, age, presence of global supply chains, and reliance on tourism and hospitality. Globally, the vast majority of cases occur in places that are both densely populated and connected to the global economy. Half of all COVID-19 cases in Spain, for example, have occurred in Madrid, while the Lombardy region in Italy, which includes the city of Milan, accounts for roughly half of all cases in the country and over 60% of the deaths.

In contrast, suburban, exurban, and small-town residents get around in the sanctuary of their private cars and have far more room inside their houses. They do not usually get lots of visitors from outside, particularly from abroad. Overall, most rural areas around the world have been largely spared, at least for now, due to much less crowding and casual human contact, which abound in cities.
https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/news ... ban-future

The writer points out that things like the current “work-from-home” growth (tele-work is up massively as businesses try to keep income and employment up) will expedite the outflow of jobs and workers from New York and other cities like Los Angeles and Chicago...Counter-urbanization...

That's what I see too.
I have my wife Zooming all day, and both sons doing various teleschooling work all day, and me porning, cs-ing, and stock marketing all day without problems. Then all of a sudden we run into some little bumps late afternoon/early evening.

A nationwide series of internet tubes should be the priority infrastructure project for any administration.

Should have been the priority for 20 years now.

Minnesota is advising people not to go to their cabins during the Pandemic. The state wants to make sure the rural hospitals do not get over-burdened.

Fuck that. My lake house is da bomb.

Plus, the rural grocery stores aren’t all pandemic’ed out like the urban ones. I found plenty of TP, paper towels, and other necessities.

It all depends. Company networks (Re: VPN) are under some serious strain. We've disabled Out Of Office notices because the sheer number of them were slowing down emails channels. Skype video calls and WebEx video calls are also discouraged unless necessary due to the same reason. They put tremendous strain on the VPN.

I live in an area where we have 1 ISP and on a good day before this crap, the internet might drop once or twice. Now, it'll drop throughout the day.

I read that both Netflix and Disney + are having buffering issues due to the amount of subscribers that are all online at the same time.

My FiOS has been great throughout all of this - basically watched Netflix for 15-18 hours this weekend with nary a blip. Switched over to Disney+ with no problems, even hooked the computer up to the tv to watch the archbishop say Mass on Sunday morning on Facebook. I don't know what Verizon's doing but so far so good.

As for the topic, there's no doubt that cities are far worse in times of pandemics like this - they've always been that way and they will continue to be that way. With that said, when there isn't a global pandemic going on, it's hard to beat the convenience of a city in terms of entertainment and dining options - there are very good reasons to live in a city, just not during plagues.

Out East, you can live a good distance from the city and still have great access via public transportation. I can drive to downtown Minneapolis, 30 minutes, downtown St Paul 20 minutes. If I drive the other direction, it's 13 miles before I see another stop sign in a small town. The best of both worlds.

A lot of people live in large cities not because they like them but because that's where the jobs for college-educated people are. I would love to see a rapid exodus from large cities back to small towns and rural areas, but I don't think we will.

Philly isn't all that different than that, except maybe 60 minutes to get downtown. But it's not all that spread out - you don't need to go far before you start seeing the Amish buggies on the road. Nothing like the megagopolis that is NYC - that place is like a F Scott Fitzgerald novel.
