Watching the press conference and all the discussion of some unspecified set of models predicting 100,000 to 200,000 plus cases if mitigation strategies are applied. They also showed one output of another model that was specifically referenced and such that you can access the output on line. It's the University of Washington model. They did show one output of it to talk about what's going to be happening over the next few weeks. But they did not mention that it also has a total deaths estimate that is frequently updated. As I type it is estimating a total deaths count of 36,614 to 152,582 deaths if mitigation strategies are applied. You can see the outputs at https://covid19.healthdata.org/projections.

So for some reason they are choosing to use the more pessimistic model output or set of model outputs (which they provided no specific reference or references for). The cynic in me says it's because Trump wants to claim he did a great job if there are something like 90,000 deaths.

What we really need is for somebody to model what would have happened if Trump hadn't waited for about a month to promote steps to stop community spread while he kept saying that everything was under control because he'd done travel restrictions.

And why does Trump have to start a press briefing on COVID-19 by saying we had the best economy we'd ever had beforehand when it's obviously not true? Why do that?

Also, why keep saying that China is paying the United States because of tariffs when THAT is not true?

I guess it's because about 45% of the population will believe that shit.

God Lord it is SO embarrassing to have this guy as President of the United States. Really makes all of us look like a bunch of complete rubes. Watching the press briefing. So humiliating to be part of a population that would allow for somebody like that to end up being elected to ANYTHING.

I loved the way the two Doctors, especially the female, tried to bail him out on the question about why didn't he start earlier. Like we don't know that the virus was already here in late January. Right.

And Trump with the constant going on to the travel restriction thing. Actually his claims are worse than I thought:

https://www.factcheck.org/2020/03/the-f ... trictions/
President Donald Trump has made a number of misleading statements about his decision on Jan. 31 to impose travel restrictions related to the novel coronavirus epidemic.
Shocker.

Encouraging to see the media starting to smell blood on this. The dude screwed up. No doubt about it. Now we need the media to progress to asking about why, when previous assessments indicated that travel restrictions are not nearly as important as taking steps to stop community spread, he did some limited travel restrictions then acted like the problem was solved.

BDKJMU wrote:Sweden sounds like could be the right approach. Went JSO with pasting about half the article, since behind a paywall.
The ski pistes are open, the restaurants are doing ample business and the malls are awash with shoppers.

Welcome to Sweden, the last holdout among the small number of Western countries to have taken a radically different approach to the coronavirus pandemic.

.....Sweden left offices and stores open, issued recommendations rather than restrictions, and waited to see what happens.

Businesses, kindergartens and schools remain open. After a long winter, Stockholm’s street cafes and outdoor bars swelled with people over the weekend, and the city’s old town drew large crowds as locals ventured out to enjoy the good weather. The only mandatory rules are a ban on meetings of more than 50 people and an order forcing bars and restaurants to only serve seated customers so as to avoid overcrowding....

...It is too early to assess whether Sweden’s approach will have a benign or catastrophic outcome, but so far, the virus hasn’t spread widely there. Sweden, with 10 million inhabitants, had 4,028 confirmed infections and 146 deaths by Monday, according to a tally compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Austria, a similarly-sized European country with about 8.8 million people that is under lockdown, had 9,200 cases and 108 deaths.

Anders Tegnell, Sweden’s chief epidemiologist and architect of the policy, says the approach, much like the original British one, is to let the virus spread as slow as possible while sheltering the elderly and the vulnerable until much of the population becomes naturally immune or a vaccine becomes available.

....Sweden has a long tradition of favoring voluntary guidelines—which call on the elderly to self-isolate and the young to reduce social mobility—over coercive measures. Dr. Tegnell said that could lead to higher compliance.

“A majority of people will stay home if they get symptoms,” he said. “We want to slow down the epidemic until Sweden experiences some sort of peak, and if the peak is not too dramatic we can continue.”

Unlike in the U.K., there is little sign of a backlash against the voluntary approach from a worried public. A Novus poll last week showed 80% of people approved of a speech by Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, in which he appealed to the personal responsibility of each adult citizen to prevent the disease’s spread.

In Stockholm this past weekend, more people appeared to avoid closed spaces than the previous weekend, and travelers on public transport were sitting apart from each other. Some Stockholmers are staying home and many skiers have cut short their trips to popular resorts such as Åre. The number of people using Stockholm’s underground and commuter trains dropped by 50% last week, according to Storstockholms Lokaltrafik, the public transport company.

Some European experts and officials, including Ansgar Lohse, a prominent German doctor, and Sir Patrick Vallance, chief scientific adviser to the British government, have praised the approach.

But even some of these proponents say it might be hard to replicate outside the specific context of Scandinavia. In Swedish culture, they note, generations don’t interact as much as they do in, say Italy. More than half of Swedish households consist of a single person, according to official data. This means less risk of younger people passing on the virus to their elders.

It may also explain why a disproportionate number of Sweden’s Covid-19 deaths occurred within the country’s Somali community, whose members tend to live in cramped accommodation in poorer neighborhoods, with more intergenerational mingling and less access to government information....
https://www.wsj.com/articles/inside-swe ... 1585598175
They are going for herd immunity

The next 6-8 weeks will be telling in Sweden whether this is a good strategy

The minute we try it they’ll be running the old campaign ads of Romney pushing grandma off a cliff in a wheelchair

CAA Flagship wrote: Tue Mar 31, 2020 2:38 pm Was watching some doctor being interviewed the other day and she said that the virus is transmitted far more by airborne droplets than contact.

I'm finding that hard to believe. Maybe it's an easier path for the virus but I wonder if it is "far more" than by contact. I don't know.

What say you?
Doc at a NY hospital saying the complete opposite.
Price went on say the virus is primarily transmitted by touching someone who has the virus and then touching your face.

"The ways that you get this is the transmission of the virus almost exclusively from your hands to your face, from your hands to your face and inside your eyes, into your nose or into your mouth," Price explained. "So there's a lot of talk about contact or getting it through contacts, hands to face."

The doctor also addressed the idea that the virus is transmitted by "long sustained contact" or through the air.

"There's also a small thought that it can be aerosolized, that it can kind of exist a little bit in the air," Price said. "The thought at this point is that you actually have to have very long sustained contact with someone. And I'm talking about over 15 to 30 minutes in an unprotected environment, meaning you're in a very closed room without any type of mask for you to get it that way."

"But very simply stated, the overwhelming majority of people are getting this by physically touching someone who has this disease or will develop it in the next one to two days and then touching their face," he pointed out.

"The thing that makes me smile a little bit is I actually know now that I won't get this disease because I know how to protect myself," Price said in the video.

Price offered two practical tips to keep you, your family and your friends from getting the coronavirus.

"Become a hand Nazi. Everything you know about your hands, just keep it clean and you will not get this disease," Price said. "The second thing is you have to start psychologically working on the connection between your hands and your face."

"Those two things combined is incredibly powerful and will prevent the transmission of disease in your family in 99 percent of cases, to know your hands are clean and not touch your face, period," Price added.
